Description: Geography 105 is an introduction to the geographic analysis of cities. You will obtain a foundation in geographical concepts to enable you to understand urban processes through the discussions and activities assigned in class.

Specific objectives are for you
to understand where different activities take place within cities and among sets of cities.
to be able to examine data and identify the processes creating patterns of activity in the city.
to understand urban social, economic, political, and environmental processes through an examination of their spatial characteristics.

The course will involve a combination of lectures, discussions, and activities. Please keep up on the reading assignments. Discussions will involve all members of the class. However, you will not be evaluated on participation.

You will be evaluated on four exercises, two examinations, and a project/paper. The exercises will involve developing and analyzing data about specific aspects of an urban area. The two examinations will cover materials from the lectures, discussions, and readings. Examinations will consist of multiple-choice, short answer, and short essay questions. The project may focus on a range of subjects and use a variety of approaches. You may write a paper reviewing the research literature in a particular urban subject, you may analyze urban data, or you may develop a presentation of some aspect of the local urban environment. A written paper must accompany the project.
