SJSU Geography Selected Spatial Data Resources
on the Internet

Digital data for use in Geographic Information Systems is abundant on the Web. This guide will help you locate data at a regional and state level. Spatial data warehouses and GIS directories provide a broader range of sources.
Bay Area Data Sets
BARD (San Francisco Bay Area Regional Database)
http://bard.wr.usgs.gov/
Four different types of data are available for the Bay Area: Digital Line Graphs (DLGs), Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs), and Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (DOQs).
All data is free and viewing software can be downloaded. Bay Area coverage varies by data type. Access available to both 1:100,000 and 1:24,000 scale Quadrangles.
DEM (Digital Elevation Models)
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/digital/dem/dem.html
Download 7.5-minute California quadrangle DEM files of the Bay Area from Point Reyes to Half Moon Bay and as far east as Antioch, Livermore, and Calaveras Reservoir. Interactive map shows available data sets.
California Data Sets
California Spatial Information Library (CaSIL)
http://gis.ca.gov/
Data sets maintained by the State of California.
California Department of Forestry
http://frap.cdf.ca.gov/infocenter.html
Statewide data on forest resources and fire hazard management, including various vegetation types. Generally at scales of approximately 1:1,000,000, some at larger scales.
California Geographical Survey
http://130.166.124.2
An FTP server run by California State University Northridge housing over 2,300 USGS 30 meter DEM, DLG, and other files for California.
Digital Elevation Models for California
http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/glis/hyper/guide/1_dgr_demfig/states/CA.html
USGS 1:250,000-scale DEM files for the state of California. Quadrangles are separated into east and west halves and can be downloaded compressed or uncompressed.
US GeoData
http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/doc/edchome/ndcdb/ndcdb.html
USGS FTP data files downloadable by state. Data includes Digital Elevation Models (1:250,000-scale and 7.5-minute), Digital Line Graphs (1:2,000,000-scale, 1:100,000-scale and Large Scale), and Land Use and Land Cover (1:250,000-scale and 1:100,000-scale). Examples of and user guides for each type of data are provided.
National STATSGO Database
http://www.ftw.nrcs.usda.gov/statsgo2_ftp.html
The State Soil Geographic Database allows FTP downloading of data by state. Directions for downloading data in numerous formats included.
Geography Network
http://www.geographynetwork.com/
ESRI-run directory of geographic data sources from around the world.

The original pathfinder was created by Julie Sweetkind, a Library Science student at San Jose State University. She is now with the Branner Library at Stanford University.
