Entering Data

Data may be entered into the spreadsheet by selecting a cell and typing values. The values being entered are displayed in the Formula Bar just below the menu bar. Complete the entry with the "Return" or the "Enter" key. Excel also provides a pair of buttons to indicate whether to accept the entered value or to cancel the entry.

Numeric Data

Numeric data consists of the digits "0-9", the decimal point ("."), and a sign ("+" or "-"). You can enter integers, or whole numbers, by simply using the decimal digits and a positive or negative sign (e.g, "-32"). Floating point , or rational numbers, may be created by separating the whole part from the fractional part with the decimal point (e.g., "-32.126").

Text Data

Text values may be entered as data or to serve to label the spreadsheet. Enter the text directly by typing the text string as the cell value. Excel will treat the entire entry as text if any non-numeric characters are present (this also means that you should not have any non-numeric characters in any cell you wish to use for numeric calculations). Other spreadsheets may have a different mechanism for entering text, such as preceding the text string with a single quote ("'abc") or by enclosing thetext string in double quotes (""abc""). Numeric values can be converted to text strings in Excel by starting the entry with an equal sign ("=") and enclosing the text in single quotes (e.g., "="abc"").
