                                            STATEMENT FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to the SJSU History Department's website.  Along with the rest of the campus community, we are looking forward to the sesquicentennial celebration of the founding of Minn's Normal School in 1857.  San Jose State University, and the entire California State University system, developed out of this small but bold initiative. While the history department itself was founded only in the 1950s, the teaching of history has been a vital part of our schools curriculum from the beginning.  As we honor our 150-year heritage, we also look to the bright future of History education at SJSU.

If you want to work with outstanding historians and teaching preparation specialists, if you want caring and careful advising through your college career, if you don't want to have the burden of debt when you have completed your degree-come join us at the History Department of San Jose State University.  The History Department combines the traditional values of academic rigor, close guidance of students and a commitment to the interaction of scholarly research with classroom teaching.  At the same time, the faculty keeps up with (and creates) cutting edge research, uses innovative technologies and teaching methods, and brings a contagious enthusiasm for teaching and learning to the classroom.

Those who want to teach in the middle or high school will find that the History major provides them with the proper training to meet both state and federal requirements in academic content for employment as a secondary teacher.  The History Department advises those seeking the teaching credential to enroll as History majors and go through our recommended course of study in preparation for taking the CSET test.  This is a sure method that will both make you eligible for the Fifth Year Credentialing Program, and will also ensure that you are compliant with federal credentialing standards.  Please call us, or visit us, for more information.  The Department is proud to have trained some of the best High School teachers in the Bay Area, and we continue to be committed to this mission.

We are proud of our Master's program in History.  Many of our students are teachers, and we have institution a Concentration in History Education to serve them better.  Others have used their SJSU History M.A.s to obtain full-time and part-time teaching positions at Community Colleges and as lecturers at four-year colleges and universities.  Some of our graduate students have gone on to prestigious doctorate and post-graduate programs.  Recent examples include the Universities of California at Berkeley, Davis and Irvine, Stanford University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Southampton, University of Cork and Oxford University.

Many of our students, both undergraduate and graduate, go on to careers other than education, of course.   San Jose State History alumni and alumnae are leaders in many fields: business, law, government, nonprofits and the military.  Employers take note: the History major is your best bet for an intelligent, hard-working employee, well-trained in research, analysis and communication skills.  We educate our students to the highest standards, because the department's faculty has been trained in the world's best universities and many of are internationally recognized as leading experts in their respective fields. Our faculty have been honored with prestigious fellowships including the NEH Fellowships and Summer Seminar Stipends, Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays Fellowships, National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowships, National Humanities Fellowship, and Spanish Ministry of Culture Fellowship. The Department of History has been selected three times to offer NEH summer seminars for schoolteachers.  The faculty's wide range of specialties is reflected in our curriculum, which covers global history from ancient history to contemporary events, from many different perspectives: political, diplomatic, military, social, economic and intellectual.  There are other advantages to a History Major.  As part of our commitment to our students, we offer more fellowships and scholarships other academic major in the university. History is one of the few departments in the college to offer an Honors Program, to students achieving a 3.5 GPA or above in the majors.  Such Students are eligible for our Honors Seminar, in which they will write a thesis papers.  These papers, as well as those written for other classes, can be submitted for inclusion in Passports, the Department's publication of the year's best student writing.  The Department has a very active chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honors society.  We also offer internships, both in Military History and Legal History, for interested students.

Members of both the campus community and the surrounding ones are cordially invited to attend on of the many interesting lectures, symposia and other events sponsored by the History Department.  Click on the "Events" link to see a list of these events, times and places.  This website will offer much of the information that you seek, but I want to invite you to call us, at
408 924-5500 or visit us in Dudley Moorhead Hall, room 134.

Very sincerely,
Jonathan P. Roth,
