Dear International Student: This year we are holding separate international Student Orientation sessions for Bachelors degree students on Tuesday, August 18, and for Masters degree students on Wednesday, August 19, 2009. Times and locations will be posted on the IPS website in July. There is no cost for this mandatory International Student Orientation. The program will cover immigration regulations pertaining to all international students, plus topics such as how to complete your immigration transfer from another U.S. institution to SJSU. In addition, there will be important information and instruction about course enrollment and registration procedures; personal safety; study at SJSU, and the academic culture of American universities. Freshman and Undergraduate transfer students are also required to attend an Academic Advising program conducted by SJSU Enrollment Services, prior to enrolling in classes. International Programs and Services offers a 2-3 days orientation that was created in an effort specifically to help prepare international students for living in the United States and attending SJSU. The International Student Orientation is a program that provides a complete overview of the U.S. regulations that must be followed for an international student to remain legally in the U.S. In addition, the orientation provides supplemental information to assist international students with their transition to SJSU. The orientation covers topics such as how to correctly transfer immigration status from another U.S. institution to SJSU and immigration regulations pertaining to both transfer students as well as students who have just arrived in the U.S. In addition, there is an opportunity to learn about course enrollment and registration procedures; living and studying at SJSU; personal safety, etc. The orientation also provides new international students with opportunities to meet other students and staff. Transfer from another U.S. institution
If you haven't completed your transfer, check Transfering to SJSU in the immigration page. International Student Orientation is a required essential first step in your program at San José State. Please confirm your plan to attend the Fall 2009 Orientation. Confirm/Respond online by filling out the Orientation Form (Click here) Tuesday, August 18, 2009: for undergraduate students It is essential that we have such information as your name, your country, your study level, your intended field of study, and any dietary restrictions you may have. While at our website, please take some time to look at the sections on 'Immigration' and 'Things You Can Do Before Orientation'. We recommend that all new & transfering students check the following topics, prepare their questions and try to get some things done before Orientation. Printout the To Do List and go over the things you can do now, and some important dates to remember. Academic advising: Whether you have a major or you are undeclared or unsure, you should meet with an academic advisor Registration & Holds: How to register, schedule and deadlines, and what you need to know about holds. Tips for settling in: getting a student ID card, Banking info, and how to obtain a driving license and or an ID card Medical insurance: International students are required to maintain adequate health insurance throughtout the duration of their studies at the University. Health plans must be approved by the International Programs and Services office. The University offers a comprehensive low cost insurance program through Somerton Student Insurance. From the San Francisco International Airport you may take public transportation, or shuttle van to San José State University, or to your destination. Caltrain, a Bay Area transit system, is one source of public transportation. You may obtain information from their website at http://www.caltrain.com . From San José International Airport you can take a van/car shuttle from the airport. From the baggage claim area, go outside to look for SHUTTLE signs. When you see a shuttle van, tell the driver where you wish to go. The cost is approximately $20.00 to San José State University. Additional information may be found at http://www.sjairport.com and at http://www.sanjoseca.gov. SJSU is located in downtown San José. The campus is bordered by 4th Street, 10th Street, San Salvador and San Fernando Streets. You may download a map of the campus from the University's website at http://www.sjsu.edu. During the International Student Orientation, one day parking permits, costing $8.00, can be obtained at the 7th Street Garage, located at San Salvador Street and 7th Street, not far from the Student Union.
