Dear International Student:

Congratulations on your admission to San José State University! The staff of the International Programs and Services Office (IPS) look forward to welcoming you and to helping make your San José experience a productive one.

We are planning Orientation sessions for you on Wednesday and Thursday, January 16 & 17, 2008, at the Loma Prieta Room inside the Student Union Building. Both days will begin at 10 a.m. There is no cost for this mandatory International Student Orientation. Students transferring from a U.S. college may attend both days, or come just for the second day. Students who are arriving in the United States for the first time must attend both days. The program will cover topics such as how to complete your immigration transfer from another U.S. institution to SJSU plus immigration regulations pertaining to all international students. In addition, there will be help and instruction about course enrollment and registration procedures; study at SJSU; personal safety, etc.

International Student Orientation is a required essential first step in your program at San José State. We strongly urge you to attend these important meetings. It may be your only chance to receive a complete overview of the U.S. regulations that you must follow to remain legally in the U.S., and also the best opportunity to give you a positive head start as you register for your first semester of classes at SJSU.  Failure to complete  required immigration check-in with IPS at Orientation may put you in violation of your legal F-1 student status.  Please be sure to bring your passport and I-20 to complete your required immigration check-in, if you haven't already given them to IPS to copy.

Housing in and around San José State can be expensive and difficult to obtain.  A good housing option for San José State students is the International House, a residence for 70 students from around the world, including the U.S., located near the campus.  Please visit the website at www.sjsu.edu/ihouse for more information. For other campus housing information please check the website http://www.sjsucampusvillage.com. Applying early is essential to locating on-campus housing. Also, waiting until arrival will result in difficulties in locating temporary housing, for which you will find some suggestions on this website. We suggest that you make arrangements before you arrive. If possible, plan to arrive at least 1 week prior to orientation if you need to locate off-campus housing.

We are very happy that you have chosen to join San José State University.
Remember:  International Programs and Services is ready to assist you.  If you have any questions upon arrival, please stop by our office in Clark Hall, 5th Floor, room 543 during the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon and 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Please check the IPS website regularly for more information and updates.

Sincerely,

Helen L. Stevens
Director

Orientation program

International Programs and Services offers a 2-3 days orientation that was created in an effort specifically to help prepare international students for living in the United States and attending SJSU. The International Student Orientation is a program that provides a complete overview of the U.S. regulations that must be followed for an international student to remain legally in the U.S. In addition, the orientation provides supplemental information to assist international students with their transition to SJSU. The orientation covers topics such as how to correctly transfer immigration status from another U.S. institution to SJSU and immigration regulations pertaining to both transfer students as well as students who have just arrived in the U.S. In addition, there is an opportunity to learn about course enrollment and registration procedures; living and studying at SJSU; personal safety, etc. The orientation also provides new international students with opportunities to meet other students and staff.
