Why Jewish Studies?

Jewish Studies at SJSU is an interdisciplinary program involving the fields of History, English and Comparative Literatures, Hebrew language study, Religious Studies, Mid-East Studies, Political Science, Media and Mass Communication, TV, Radio, Film and Theater. Jewish Studies seeks to inform as well as foster inquiry and critical thinking, helping students construct their own meaning in a world that at times seems devoid of meaning. As is true with any good learning, it seeks to enable learners to make the leap from knowledge to commitment and action.

Fall 2008 Classes

Fall 2008 Jewish Studies courses will soon be available for enrollment. Courses begin August 25th, 2008.

Travel the desert paths of the Ancient Near East with Jonathan Roth, a History professor whose knowledge is seemingly endless and who loves a great argument. (TTR 12-1:15)

Dry, witty, and very smart, art history professor Marilyn Wyman will teach a new gem of a course, Jewish Art from antiquity to the present (T TR 9:00-10:15).

Professor Mira Amiras will teach one of her—and her students’—personal favorites, Jewish Mysticism, Magic & Folklore, (M 6:30-9:15).

Brent Walters brings to his Bible course his enormous knowledge and fast wit, as well as items from his 85,000 piece private collection of ancient Judeo/Christian writings and artifacts; his introductory Bible History and Literature course is full-course feast (MW 12-1: 15; T TR 3-4:15).

Rina Katzen will teach all levels of Hebrew, as she has at SJSU for 36 years!
