The Louie Barozzi Scholarship

Criteria

  1. Academic Excellence – 3.25 cumulative GPA or above, with preference given to those with higher GPA and better qualifications
  1. Must be a matriculated SJSU student participating in a state-supported, SJSU certified Study Abroad program for one term (Fall, Spring or Summer) or an academic year.  SJSU certified programs are:
    1. SJSU Bilateral Exchange Programs
    2. CSU International Programs
    3. International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) consortium

Students attending SJSU through Open University and Intra-System Visitor status, as well those students participating in non-certified programs are not eligible for the scholarship.  Students participating in the Special Session Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs are also not eligible.

Amounts of scholarships
Two $1,000 scholarships

Upon completion of the Study Abroad program, scholarship recipients are expected to:

  1. Write an evaluative report about their experiences abroad for future applicants.
  2. Contribute to the internationalization of San José State University.
  3. Assist with the promotion of study abroad and the recruitment of future applicants through classroom presentations, distributing publicity materials, Study Abroad Fairs, etc.

Funding for US Study
Funding for US Study Online is an extensive database of scholarships, fellowships and grants organized and maintained by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Funding for US Study includes all types of funding programs, for all levels of post-secondary study, across the full range of academic areas.

International Scholarship Program
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and Laureate have come together to establish one of the largest international scholarship programs dedicated to encouraging US Hispanic students to participate in study abroad programs.

Bridging Scholarships (Japan only)
The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project accepts applications from American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations has made it possible for ATJ to award 100 scholarships annually to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan.
Amount: $2,500.00--$4,000.00

Bundeskanzler Scholarship (Germany only)
Amount: Monthly allowance for housing and living expenses ranges from DM 3,000 to DM 5,500. The amount will depend upon the particular situation of the candidate and be determined in each case by the selection committee. Special allowance will be made for married scholars.

Churchill Scholarship (United Kingdom only)
Amount: One year of tuition and fees (approximately $25,000), plus a living allowance of $10,000-$12,000 and a travel allowance of $500.

CIEE Scholarships
Amount: Varies
Deadline: April 1st for summer, fall, academic year, and January term programs (beginning between May 1 and January 30). November 1st for spring, summer and January term programs (beginning between January 1 and July 31)

Freeman-Asia Scholarship (East and Southeast Asia only)
The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA Award Program is to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awardees will be expected to share their experiences with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others, and to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities.
Amount: $3,000.00--$7,000.00

The George J. Mitchell Scholarships (Graduate Students for Ireland only)
Amount: The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition and housing for one calendar year along with international travel and a living expenses stipend.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship (Germany only)
Offers undergraduate awards to highly qualified undergraduate students for study abroad, senior thesis research and/or internships in the Federal Republic of Germany. Awards are for a Semester or Year Abroad (between four and ten months), either as part of an organized study abroad program, or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year.
Amount: Monthly stipend of EUR615 and one-time allowances of between EUR869.20 and EUR1,022.58 to help defray the cost of international travel and EUR150 for extra baggage expenses. Grantees will also receive a one-time allowance of between EUR150 and EUR260 for books and start-up costs.

Gilman International Scholarship Program
This program offers a competition for awards for study abroad, for US citizen undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university. Scholarship can be used to study in any nation worldwide except Cuba and those under a US Department of State Travel Warning.
Amount: Up to $5000.00

IIE Asia/Pacific Travel Grant
The West Coast Region of the Institute of International Education (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon and Washington) announces scholarships to assist undergraduate students to study abroad in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Island Nations.
Amount: Minimum award is round-trip airfare between the West Coast and the overseas study site

Marshall Scholarship (Graduate Students for the United Kingdom only)
Amount: University fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.

Meta Marion Goldsmith Scholarship
Awarded yearly to foreign language majors and minors including MA and Teacher Education graduate students.

National Security Education Program
The NSEP consists of three components: undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, and institutional grants. Scholarship may be used to fund semester and full year study programs.

Rotary Scholarships
The Rotary Foundation is the largest private source of scholarships in the world. The Rotary Foundation seeks to promote international understanding through student exchanges: all scholarships are "ambassadorial," which means Rotary seeks candidates who would represent both the organization and their country well.

CSU International Programs

CSU International Programs Scholarship
Made Possible through the generosity of former IP participants, the award is $500. Approximately five awards are made each year. Awardees are selected based on academic excellence, financial need, and the quality of the application. Open to all IP participants except applicants for Japan, China and Taiwan.

Deadline: February 1 (May 1 for Australia/New Zealand).

Friends of Florence Scholarship Program (Italy only)
Each year, through the generous support of the County of Santa Clara/Province of Florence, Italy Sister-County Commission a scholarship of $1,500-$3,000 is awarded to SJSU students accepted into the CSU Florence, Italy program.

Wang Family Scholarship (China and Taiwan only)
Recognizing the importance of international education, the Wang Family generously provides scholarships for study in China and Taiwan. Ten $4,000 scholarships will be awarded to students for study in China, and ten $4,000 scholarships will be awarded to students for study in Taiwan.

SJSU Bath, England Program

The Frank Lewandowski Scholarship Fund
In memory of the husband of the former Director of the SJSU Bath Program in England, Professor Lou Lewandowski, Ph.D. established a scholarship program for students selected to participate in the SJSU Semester in England program.

International Student Exchange Program (ISEP)

ISEP's Korea Travel Scholarships
ISEP is accepting nominations from U.S. member institutions for the Korea Travel Scholarships. These scholarships are for participants going on exchange during the 2004-2005 academic year to Ajou, Ewha, Keimyung, Korea, and Yonsei universities. First priority will be given to students with no personal experience or connections in Korea. Award criteria include: genuine interest in Korea, strong academic background, and financial need.
