San José State University and West Valley College have received funding to send
students on a semester exchange program in Brazil, beginning in Spring 2008.
The scholarships will provide stipends of $3,500 through a grant awarded by FIPSE
(Fund for Improvement of Postsecondary Education) from the U.S. Department of Education.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants for scholarships must:

  • be in good standing with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
  • be pursuing degrees in fields offered by participating schools in Brazil (engineering, business, social sciences.)
  • have intermediate proficiency in Portuguese or have strong proficiency in Spanish and enroll in Portuguese language classes beginning the year before their travel.
  • be enrolled at SJSU for one semester prior to departure.

Placement

Students will apply for the program in Brazil and not a particular university. Applicants can
request a specific university but placements will be made according to space availability, as well as the academic field and career goals of applicants. Students accepted for participation in the exchange program will be placed in one of three universities:

  • Universidade Federal de Itajubá, Minas Gerais
  • INATEL, Minas Gerais
  • FUCAPI, Manaus, Amazonas

Administration

Participants are required to be enrolled full-time (equivalent of 12 units) at the host institution in order to remain in continuing status at SJSU. All completed courses are guaranteed to transfer back to SJSU as resident credit, but students must consult with their academic advisors prior to departure to determine how individual courses will meet requirements for their major, minor, electives or general education.

Participants will pay their normal fees to SJSU and are eligible to use all of their financial aid except work-study. Participants are not required to pay non-resident fees to the host university in Brazil. Students can use the $3,500 stipend to pay their personal expenses, but they are responsible for all expenses above that amount. Personal expenses include: airfare, passport, visa, health insurance, housing, local transportation and travel, etc.
