CITY FACTS
London, England
London is the capital of the United Kingdom and Europe's largest city
with a population of seven million. It was founded by the Romans in
the first century AD as an administration center and port for trade
with the rest of Europe. It has been the principal home of British monarchs
for over a thousand years, as well as the center for business and commerce.
London is one of the world's most exciting and diverse cities. In addition
to museums, galleries, cathedrals and churches, London is packed with
a huge variety of shops and entertainment. Although London has an incredible
history, it is also a vibrant city that is constantly changing and modernizing.
CAMPUS FACTS
Roehampton University
Roehampton University has its history in four teacher education colleges,
the oldest of which dates from 1841. The four colleges came together
in 1975 to form Roehampton Institute London, which achieved degree awarding
powers and then federated with the University of Surrey in 2000 as the
University of Surrey Roehampton. In 2004, it changed its name to Roehampton
University.
Roehampton is located six miles southwest of central London, with all
its cultural and social attractions, on a beautiful parkland campus.
There are about 8,000 students studying from undergraduate to PhD level
in eight academic schools: Arts, English and Modern Languages, Humanities
and Cultural Studies, Business, Computing and Social Sciences, Psychology
and Therapeutic Studies, Life and Sports Sciences, Education Studies
and Initial Teacher
Education.

Academic Program
For detailed information, check the Module Selection guide
The academic calendar consists of two seventeen-week semesters and
then a week of final exams for each term. Units and grading are based
on the U.K. system, but these will be translated to SJSU equivalencies
upon return from the program. SJSU students must take 40-60 U.K. credits
(equal to 12-18 SJSU units). In addition to choosing the right credit
load, students are required to take modules (courses) at the right level.
There are three levels that correspond to the year of study in a U.K.
degree. Students will be expected to choose the appropriate level for
their degree and provide academic evidence for any modules that require
pre-requisites.
Studying in Britain can be very different from the styles of teaching
and learning in the U.S. At Roehampton there is a strong reliance on
personal learning and initiative. Classes are student-centered and participants
are encouraged to voice opinions in group work and seminars. Assessments
are specific to subject areas but can include essays, examinations,
course work and module notebooks. For some courses, 70-100% of the assessment
may be based on the final examination.
