City FACTS

Beijing
a metropolis in northern China, is the capital of the People's Republic of China. Beijing is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city.  Beijing is recognized as the political, educational, economic and cultural center of the People's Republic of China.

Qingdao
well-known to the West as Tsingtao, is a sub-provincial city in eastern Shandong province.  Qingdao is a major seaport, naval base, and economical development center. It is also the site of the Tsingtao Brewery and the headquarters of the manufacturing giant, Haier. As one the most beautiful coastal cities in China, Qingdao will host the 2008 Summer Olympics sailing events.

Jinan
is a sub-provincial city and the capital of Shandong province. Jinan was chosen as one of the three primary seminar bases because the rich quality of its education resources.  A tapestry of cultures (Confucius, modern development and rural country) makes it an ideal location to study human development, experience cross-cultural communication, and student learning.

Qufu
is the legendary birthplace of Confucius. The Temple of Confucius, Cemetery of Confucius, and the Kong Family Mansion are all listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Shanghai
situated on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta in East China, is the one of the largest cities of the People's Republic of China and the eighth largest in the world.  Shanghai is one of the world's busiest ports, and became the largest cargo port in the world in 2005.
Some challenges remain for Shanghai as the city struggles to cope with increased worker migration, a huge wealth gap, and environmental degradation. Despite these challenges, Shanghai's skyscrapers and modern lifestyle are often seen as representing China's recent economic development.  Shanghai will host the 2010 World Expo. Shanghai is a city in a significant transition with integration of western and eastern traditions and lifestyles.

Campus FACTS

Qingdao University is located on two campuses in the city of Qingdao comprised of 25 colleges with 73 specialties. There are 25 provincial key disciplines, laboratories, and engineering research centers, and 66 specialties with doctor and master programs.

University of Jinan is located on two campuses in the city Jinan.  It is comprised of 20 colleges with 62 specialties

Shandong Economic University is a comprehensive university with a focus on economics and management located on two campuses in Jinan.  It is comprised of 16 colleges with 44 specialties

Qufu Normal University is located in Qufu with a new campus on the coast in Rizhao. The university has 6 doctoral degree programs and 77 master degree programs. It has 55 four year specialties which cover 10 branches of learning including literature, science, industry and law. The university has 1 independent college (Xing Tan College), 29 colleges and departments, 28 research institutes, 14 provincial key programs and 3 provincial key laboratories.

Eligibility Requirements

MA or PPS Credential Students in the Department of Counselor Education are eligible to participate. Other program students need the instructor’s approval.

Program Overview

Course Enrollment
This course is offered by the Department of Counselor Education. All participants should take EDCO 289 and EDCO 292 (three units each).

Program Overview
This program will first take students to Beijing to visit Great Wall, Forbidden City and brand new Olympic sites. Students will travel to Qingdao City, Jinan City and Qufu City to conduct counseling workshops and presentations. They will visit Confucius’ hometown, schools and Tai Mountain. Finally, students will have two free days in Shanghai. The program fee covers lodging, transportation, and weekday meals except for free days when students will be on their own

Safety and Visas

Student safety is a top priority. The group will stay in international residence hotels at various Chinese universities.  According to the latest U.S. Consumer Information, Americans visiting China are advised to take the normal safety precautions that travelers take when visiting a foreign country.
Visas will be obtained as a group from the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco. There will be $150 fee which includes the Consulate’s visa fee.
