Academic Program

Elementary Education Program

Course Enrollment
This course is offered by the Elementary Education Department and all participants must take the following 6-unit course:  EDEL 143A, Phase I Student Teaching.  This is a required credit/no credit course that must be completed before students begin their first full-time student teaching assignment in EDEL 143B.

Program Overview

This special 3-week study tour will take place May 22 – June 14, 2009 in Antigua, Guatemala.  It is a unique opportunity for 15-18 credential candidates to complete EDEL143A in an international setting during the summer.  The CTC requires that preservice teachers be placed in classrooms where they will experience linguistic, socio-economic, and cultural diversity.  By completing EDEL 143A in a school in Antigua, Guatemala, you will be well prepared to address these issues.  You will be housed in a small hotel or posada in Antigua.  In addition to class activities, three weekend excursions will be arranged to provide you with an opportunity to visit a coffee plantation in Antigua, Volcán Pacaya, Lake Atitlán, Chichicastenango, (Mayan market day), and Mayan ruins in Copán, Honduras.

Accommodation, Safety and Visas

Participants will stay at la Posada La Merced in Antigua, Guatemala.  School placements will be at Colegio Colonial Bilingüe and Colegio Boston.
Since the program is based in a colonial city, there is limited access for students with physical disabilities.  A lot of walking on cobblestone streets and sidewalks and the lack of an elevator in the schools and posada require that students be physically fit.
All travel by group will be by private shuttle from and to the airport in Guatemala City; to and from the two schools and the Posada; and for all the tours.

You need a U.S. Passport to travel to Guatemala and Honduras if you are an American citizen.  The U.S. Passport must be valid 3 months beyond the intended stay. Visas are not required for citizens of the U.S.A., Canada, or the United Kingdom.  If you are a citizen of another country, please check the Guatemalan and Honduran Embassy or Consulate for additional requirements.
