About Us: Introduction to This Section

The Health Science Department is home to a dedicated group of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners. You can see some of them on our homepage and read a bit about them in Our Homepage Photos. You can also get a quick overview of our department through the Health Science Fact Sheet.

Several important documents serve as “guiding stars” for our department. Our curriculum and priorities are guided by the department mission, core values, and principles. Our diversity affirmation was drafted by MPH Student Association Co-Chairs Wendy Hussey and Elvia Soberanes Iniquez in 2000 and has been endorsed by every MPH class since then. The Commitments of Our Graduates are developed each year by the graduating MPH and undergraduate students.

University and program accreditation are very important aspects of our department and our programs. All of our programs are included in the university’s accreditation by the Western Association for Schools and Colleges (WASC). We are very proud that our Master in Public Health program has been continuously accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) since our first review in 1974. AY 06-07 is the final year of our MPH program’s CEPH current accreditation self-study. Our site visit scheduled for May 14-15, 2007.

Our department history is rich, reflective of the time and place in which it has grown and the people who brought it to life. We are grateful for the relationships established by our founders and the visionary legacy we inherited.

Our department newsletter, The Harbinger, has been published every year since 1970! This newsletter, written by students and faculty, started as a mimeographed project and, 35 years later, went electronic!

Our department does a lot – and on a shoestring! You can support the department through financial and in-kind contributions to the university but earmarked for Health Science. We appreciate your generous gifts of $5 - $5,000 (our current range!).
