FacultyThe MPH program benefits from the faculty’s active community-based orientation. All faculty members have ongoing research and/or service projects - most of which involve MPH students in one way or another. The MPH faculty is active in the leadership of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), Northern California SOPHE, the American Public Health Association, and other professional organizations. Education: Dr. Mamary received a B.S. in Community Health and Biology from Montclair State College, an M.S. in Community Health Education from Hunter College, CUNY, and a DrPH from the University of California, Berkeley. Scholarship, Service, Awards: Dr. Mamary's research interests are in the areas of organizational development, HIV prevention and care services, and evaluation research. He has conducted and provided technical assistance to community-based needs assessments and evaluations in rural areas (a 13-county area of rural Northern California, Kern County) and urban centers (San Francisco, Santa Clara County). He regularly conducts primary care effectiveness reviews across the country for the Ryan White CARE Act Title IIIb Grant Program. Dr. Mamary was elected President of the Northern California Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) chapter. He was elected Co-Vice President of national SOPHE in 2002 and served as Co-Chair of the 2003 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. He currently serves as a member of the SOPHE Board of Trustees and Secretary of CAMP, the Council of Accredited MPH Programs. MPH Core Faculty
Education: Dr. Kathleen Roe received a B.S. in Sociology, an M.P.H. in Health Education, and a Dr.P.H., all from the University of California, Berkeley. Scholarship, Service, Awards: Dr. Roe’s research interests are in the areas of community-based programs, health disparities, and participatory process evaluation. She is Director of the Community Health Studies Group, which provides technical assistance and participatory evaluation services to community programs throughout Northern California. Dr. Roe was elected SOPHE President 1999-2000 and has held leadership positions in the American Public Health Association and NC-SOPHE. She is on the Editorial Board of Health Promotion Practice and the California Journal of Health Promotion. She was Guest Co-Editor for the HPP April 2002 theme issue on Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities. She is currently Co-Chair for Implementation of the Professionwide Task Force for Quality Assurance in Health Education Professional Preparation. She was named the SJSU 2002 Outstanding Professor and received the 2001 Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) Mentor of the Year Award and Northern California SOPHE’s highest honor, the Dorothy Nyswander Award for Leadership in Health Education.
Education: Dr. Perales received his BA degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley and his MPH and DrPH degrees from the University of Texas School of Public Health. He was born in Brownsville, Texas. Scholarship, Service, Awards: Dr. Perales' research interests are in the areas of tobacco control, community coalitions, food security, injury prevention, strategic planning, and program evaluation. professional and research interests include injury control and program evaluation. He has conducted evaluation of many community-based programs in those areas, as well as prenatal care outreach, nutrition education for low-income populations, child immunization, and needle exchange. He has provided strategic planning consultations to the Santa Clara County Senior Care Commission, the Gold Country Tobacco Control Coalition, and the California Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. He is a member of the Editoral Advisory Group of Health Promotion Practice and served two terms as on the Editorial Board of Health Education and Behavior. He was elected Co-Vice President and Trustee of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) and both Treasurer and President of the Northern California SOPHE chapter.
Education: Dr. Anne Roesler received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, an M.P.H. in Community Health Education from San José State University, and an Ed.D. in Organization and Leadership from the University of San Francisco. Courses: Anne currently teaches HS 1 Understanding Your Health, HS 165 The Health Professional, and HS 291A, B, & C MPH Fieldwork Seminar, Practicum, and Synthesis. Scholarship, Service, Awards: Dr. Roesler's research interests are in the areas of youth disenfranchisement, community-based programs for youth, housing policy and services, the effects of war on soldiers and their families, and anthropological methods. She is active in the Society of Public Health Educators, American Public Health Association, and the International Union for Health Promotion Education. MPH Public Health Faculty
Education: Dr. Gerstman received a B.S. in Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University, an M.P.H. in Epidemiology from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Comparative Pathology from the University of California, Davis. He teaches Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Computational Public Health Statistics. Scholarship, Service, Awards: Dr. Gerstman's research interests are in the areas of epidemiologic research methods, pharmacoepidemiology, drug safety, and medical and public health record linkage. Before coming to SJSU in 1990, he was a Fellow of the National Institutes of Health - U.S. Public Health Service Epidemiology Training Program and faculty at the Graduate School at National Institutes of Health. He is the author of Epidemiology Kept Simple, a widely used epidemiology text currently in its second edition, and is currently working on development and publication of a text on data analysis.
Education: Dr. Rangavajhula received her Ph.D. from Old Dominion University of Norfolk, Virginia, and has a medical degree from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India. Scholarship, Service, Awards: Dr. Rangavajhula's research interests include work on women's health and domestic violence. She is an active member of the Women's Caucus of the Americal Public Health Association. Dr. Rangavajhula is Coordinator of the undergraduate Concentration in Health Care Administration. |
