Program at a Glance

The MPH program is based on the curricular elements identified by CEPH for graduate programs in community health education. The 42 unit curriculum is organized around a health education core (12 units), public health core (24 units), fieldwork (6 units - 400 hours plus practicum). A two-part culminating experience is also requried. A thesis or project option (3-9 extra credits) is also available. Concurrent prerequisite coursework in biostatistics (3 units) is required.

The MPH program is designed for working people. Most courses are held in the afternoon or evening, once a week whenever possible. With only a few sequencing requirements, students are free to schedule their course of study - and their pace through the program - to fit their interests, professional development, and life circumstances. It is possible to complete the program in two very intense years. However, most students find it more meaningful (and practical) to take three years, and some go for four, five, or even six!

San José State’s MPH program has long been known for its practice-oriented, community-based training. Students are involved in class exercises and writing assignments based on practice challenges and real-world situations. Although the curriculum is not designed around the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) framework, the CHES areas of responsibility and specific competencies are included in the self-assessment that students perform in the first and last semesters. Our curriculum is informed by the Graduate Standards for Health Education Professional Preparation, new emphasis areas for public health training defined by the Institute of Medicine, and the Advanced Health Education competencies.

One of the hallmarks of the MPH program is its focus on professional development. MPH students take on a variety of key leadership roles in the MPH Student Association (MPH-SA). The students regularly publish a newsletter, plan and lead a two-day Orientation for new MPH students each Fall, present a Sexual Diversity Workshop each Spring, host activities for World Health Week, and take celebration of the graduating students each May. Faculty and students work together on a series of professional development activities, including special workshops and the annual MPH Reunion. These activities create opportunities for students to develop professional skills while working together with faculty and community colleagues.
