Academic and Tuition Information

Brief Program Description: The San José State University CEPH accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) Distance Education Program provides health professionals with an opportunity to complete the degree in 24 months. The distance learning MPH curriculum courses are accessed via the Internet. This online flexibility allows students to maximize their educational experience while also continuing their professional activities.

Accreditation: The SJSU MPH Program has been fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), since 1974. San Jose State University, established in 1857, is the oldest institution of higher education in California. It is one of the 23 campuses of the internationally recognized California State University System and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Degree Offered: A 42-unit Master of Public Health degree with specialization in Community Health Education.

MPH Instructional Faculty: The Distance Education courses are taught by professional full-time tenured and tenure-track SJSU MPH faculty and by MPH part-time faculty who are experts in their fields. The full-time faculty has an average of 15 years of teaching experience in the SJSU MPH Program. This faculty has dedicated their careers to teaching and practicing public health education, in addition to conducting community-based research.

Fees: The Fall 2008 cohort fees are $475 per unit for the 42-unit program. The total tuition is $19,950 plus books and travel/lodging in San José once a year for approximately five days in mid-August each year. In comparison to other accredited MPH Programs offered on-line, with tuition costs ranging from approximately $28,000 to $60,000, the SJSU MPH degree is an educational and CEPH accredited bargain. The tuition is the same regardless of in-state, out-of-state, or international residency. There are no additional fees.

Financial Aid:

  • All MPH Distance Education Program students are enrolled through Special Session.
  • California students in Special Session are not eligible for the State University Grant program because they do not pay state university fees.
  • Special Session students are eligible for Federal Stafford Loans.
  • Unfortunately, there are no scholarships, fellowships, or student assistantships offered by the MPH Program.
  • Further information on Financial Aid can be found at: http://www.sjsu.edu/faso/

Admissions: Approximately 25 students are admitted each fall. There is no spring admission.

Academic Calendar: The distance learning MPH program operates year-round. Students begin the MPH Program in August and graduate 24 months later with their cohort.

On-campus Meetings: Students must visit the SJSU campus at least three-times during their 2 years in the MPH Program. Specific information on assignments, dates, exact location, and accommodation options will be provided at least three months prior to the meeting. Students are expected to pay for their own transportation, lodging, and some meals.

  •  Orientation and Instructional Meeting: The program begins with approximately two weeks of online instruction during the first week of August. During that period, students will be given a homework assignment that will be completed during a mandatory five day orientation and instructional experience in San José during the third week of August.
  • Final Meeting: Students in the second year will have their final class meeting in August. In addition, the final August meeting will include completion of final course requirements and a graduation convocation.

Distance Learning Technology: All courses will be offered online via the WebCT platform. (Go to http://online.sjsu.edu/ for examples of WebCT Course offerings at SJSU). This platform will be used to deliver and receive course assignments, serve as a forum for class discussion, and provide support for course textbooks and other reading material. In addition, the real-time Elluminate platform will be used in most classes (Go to http://www.elluminate.com/index.jsp for more information on Elluminate). Students may be required to attend real-time class sessions in the early evening (Pacific Time), in each course, once a week. The Elluminate Live platform provides students with a live classroom experience from their office or home computer (See screenshot of Elluminate Session). Students should have some technology experience, the necessary computer equipment, and ideally access to a broadband internet connection. Specific information on technology needs is contained in the Technical Requirements document .

Course Offerings: A schedule of courses and descriptions of all of the required courses are located on this website. In order to facilitate the completion of the 42-unit MPH degree in 2 years, students will complete each course in an approximately 5 to 8 week sequence; depending on course units. Some courses will overlap with the field experience. Course dates are posted in the Schedule of Courses . Distance learning courses are only open to students admitted into the MPH Distance Program.

Practicum (Field Experience): A 400-hour field experience is required by our CEPH accrediting body and must be completed by all students regardless of prior professional experience. Most students are able to complete their field experience requirement within their immediate community, although some students have done their fieldwork in international settings. Sometimes students can do the internship in their present place of employment. However, a person’s regular employment duties cannot be counted towards the field experience. Quite often students in a particular work setting are able to find a special project in another department or division that can serve as their field experience. The MPH faculty will assist the student in acquiring a field experience that will be beneficial to the student’s professional growth and provide service to communities and agencies.

MPH Program Course Restrictions: Students in the Distance Education Program cannot take courses in the SJSU MPH campus program.

SJSU Library: All students will be provided with access to the online resources of the SJSU Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. library. In addition, students will be able to access the resources of other university libraries through the King library. Go to http://www.sjlibrary.org/services/distance/index.htm for information on the MLK library.
