Peer Advisors assist students with academic adjustment to SJSU and to the majors. Peer Advisors are assigned to specific colleges (Applied Sciences & Arts, Business, Science, & Social Sciences) or Academic Advising and Retention Services and assist students to navigate the department's degree, programs, and academic policies/procedures. Peer Advisors refer students to other campus resources as well as recommend how students can further their education/experience in their chosen major/profession.
Peer Mentors support students during their academic and social adjustment to SJSU. Peer Mentors know how to refer students to appropriate campus resources in order to navigate more easily through the university system. Peer Mentors work with individual instructors/departments to develop smaller communities within SJSU that more actively involve and engage students in their college experience.

Tutors at the Learning Assistance Resource Center (LARC) are nationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). LARC's peer tutors are undergraduate and graduate students who have demonstrated proficiency in the subjects that they tutor (usually by having completed the courses they are tutoring with an "A" or a "B"). Each applicant must successfully complete the interview preparation and screening process before being considered for a tutoring position.
For Level I CRLA Certification, tutors must attend all training meetings, complete 25 hours of face to face tutoring as a hired LARC tutor, and complete the assessment and evaluation process. Level II CRLA Certification requires an additional 25 hours of face to face tutoring as a hired tutor in LARC; attendance, participation in, and completion of designated Level II training; and full participation in and completion of the assessment and evaluation process.
