Question:
I am a student from a local community college who is planning to transfer to SJSU. It is very important to me to pass the WST so I can start taking my upper division courses. Can I attend the WST workshop now or do I have to wait until I am officially enrolled in SJSU?
Answer:
Since this workshop is so popular and has over 100 people attend, we have had to limit the attendance to San José State University students. When you do receive your acceptance to SJSU, you would be welcome to attend the next workshop. Please bring your admission notice to sign-up at the LARC office. Question:
I am looking for English and mathematics tutoring for my son who is in high school and daughter who is in elementary school. Do you offer a service like this or can you tell me where I could get some information?
Answer:
To receive services at the Learning Assistance Resource Center, one needs to be a San José State University student. To find a tutor for your son or daughter, you can contact the SJSU Pre-College Program at 408-924-2567, or post a notice on the Student Union bulletin board using a 3 x 5 card, or post a job announcement on the San José State career center web site at http://www.careercenter.sjsu.edu
Question:
I am an enrolled student of SJSU, but I am taking a class in a local community college. If I bring my homework from the community college, can I get the learning assistance from SJSU?
Answer:
Since you are enrolled in SJSU, you may come for drop-in tutoring for the local community college class. For other classes you are taking at SJSU, you may request an assigned tutor to work with you on a weekly basis if needed. Please check our drop-in policy and please also note that tutors will not do the homework for students.
Question:
What is the maximum time that a student may work with his/her tutor - if there is no other student waiting for the tutor?
Answer:
A regular tutoring session is one hour or if no student is waiting it will be up to the tutor to work with the student for up to and not to exceed two hours per week. If you feel you have additional needs, you are welcome to make an appointment to speak with a LARC professional staff member.
Question:
I am a San José State University student. I work during the day and am unable to come to tutoring at the LARC for my class during the hours you are open. Can you recommend someone whom I can pay to meet with me during the hours the LARC is closed?
Answer:
As a policy, we are unable to refer tutors for services outside of their regularly scheduled hours here at the LARC. You may call the LARC office at 408-924-2587 if you wish to speak with a tutor directly.
Question:
If I want to become a tutor at LARC, what do I do?
Answer:
Check to make sure you meet the minimum academic qualifications
for applying to be a tutor; these are “clear” academic
standing, a minimum overall SJSU GPA of 2.75, and at least B’s
in the subjects you want to tutor.
Come in to the Student Services Center, Room 600 and pick up an
application at the front desk.
When you return your application, attach a copy of your transcripts
and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the subject
in which you want to tutor. Potential writing tutors also should
include a writing sample (any paper that you turned in for a class
and had returned to you with a grade). If you are applying to be
a writing tutor, your letter can be from any faculty member who
can address your writing abilities and your potential as a writing tutor.
