Tutor Training
All new tutors participate in twelve hours of level one tutor training (five hours are covered in orientation). An additional twelve hours are covered for level two tutor training.
A LARC coordinator also observes each new tutor at some point during
his or her first semester and provides feedback. LARC’s tutor
training program is certified by the national College
Reading and Learning Association.

- A tutor’s role and responsibilities
- The first session
- Tutoring responsibilities
- The tutoring cycle
- Effective use of communication skills
- Facilitation of critical thinking
- Tutoring in specific subject areas
- Study skills
- Learning styles
- Learning disabilities
- Tutorial scenarios and difficult situations
Topics covered in second level training for writing tutors include:
- Teaching the writing process
- Practicing minimalist tutoring
- Using praise and positive feedback
- Writing and tutoring as dialogic processes
- Using questions to help students gain clarity
- Addressing cultural differences and rhetorical expectations
- Working with non-native speakers of English
- Teaching prewriting and organization
- Addressing grammar and syntax issues
Topics covered in second level training for Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering Tutors include:
- Tutoring Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering using different modalities
- Identifying and using Mathematical, Computer Science and Engineering resources
- Designing subject specific content to help the tutorial process
- Discussion of different methods of teaching common mathematical problems
- Discussion on the topic of student study skills specifically in the subject areas of mathematics and science
