Kathleen Roe joined the department in 1988, serving as MPH Director (1990 – 2001) and Department Chair (2001- 2013) before returning to the full-time faculty in Fall 2013. Over her 25+ years at SJSU, she has developed and taught many undergraduate and MPH courses (on campus and online) – her favorites include Community Health Promotion, Health Program Planning, Introduction to Public Health, Community Organizing, Multicultural Communication, Leadership, and our new course, HS 74 Healthy Communities. Her research centers on the ways in which people are engaged with the issues of their time. Her community-based scholarship has included participatory research with grandparent caregivers (with Meredith Minkler), HIV prevention community planning (with Kevin Roe), and Salud Familiar en McKinley (with so many Health Science partners!). She is Founding Director of the Intercambio with the Ecoalebrije Artisan Association, Oaxaca, Mexico. She loves spending time with her family, cooking, running, travel, music, reading, and KPFA.
