Bio

John McClusky is a designer and Associate Professor of Industrial Design at San Jose State University. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Design from the University of Cincinnati and a Master's degree from The Ohio State University with specializations in Computer Graphics and Cognitive Systems Engineering. In 2004, Professor McClusky partnered with Anthropology Professor Charles Darrah in the creation of the Human Aspirations and Design Lab and the consulting practice, Design Practices Collaborative. Their research and design ventures focus on the "fuzzy front end" of the design of goods and services for both public and private sector clients. Their goal is to develop better ways to bridge the gap between empirical ethnographic data and design practice. In addition to work in design process, Associate Professor McClusky has also spent a great deal of his career developing curriculum for teaching foundation design principles to both students and clients alike. His new product development and design strategy clients have included Roche Diagnostics, Xerox and Fuji Xerox, Swingline/Acco Brands, Herman Miller, Proctor & Gamble, Whirlpool, Crown Equipment Corporation and Rio Digital Audio. His work has earned several awards including the IDEA Gold Award, the Red Dot for High Quality Design and the Atheneum Good Design Award. His students' work has been acknowledged with numerous awards in the BraunPrize, Red Dot, IDEA, ID Magazine, Marksman and International Housewares Association Design Competitions.
