Bio

I've been at SJSU since 1990, teaching some or all of my classes online since 1999. I chaired the department for 5 years and served as the chair of the University Council of Chairs and Directors for 3 years. My research, teaching, and service generally focus on applied communication, as with organizational life, games and play, and new media. The fifth edition of my public speaking text coauthored with James Lull, Public Speaking: The Evolving Art, will come out in April 2023. Recently, Joy Hart (executive director of the honors program at the University of Louisville) and I published a survery of communication book, Communicate, Connect, Collaborate. In October 2016, Dr. Ted Coopman, four SJSU undergraduate students, and I presented a two-part workshop at the International Academic Conference on Meaningful Play on researching play and games, First Person Researcher. In May 2019 Dr. Ted Coopman and I presented a paper on the COMM social media at the Twelfth International Conference on E-Learning and Innovative Pedagogies in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. We published a revised version of the paper, ExperientialLearning@SocialMedia.edu: Using the Tech Start-up Concept to Train, Engage, and Inform Students, in Ubiquitous Learning: An International Journal. The first faculty member in my department to teach online, I've conducted numerous workshops and training sessions in online pedagogy.
