Mexico: Once Upon a Time in Oxaca

Program Description 

Get to know another culture this Spring Break by signing up for the Oaxaca Alternative Spring Break program! The region has over 16 different ethnic groups, each with a unique language and culture, allowing the city of Oaxaca to be well known for its cuisine, skilled artisans, and traditional handicrafts. During this trip, participants will have an immersive experience by living with a local/host family, exploring the city with cultural and historical excursions and activities, and engaging with the community through service learning projects and activities.

Examples of activities include (subject to change):

  • Spanish lessons: a brief introduction to the Spanish language
  • Salsa dance workshop
  • Service learning/community engagement activities
  • Explore art museums and galleries
  • Hang out with the locals in the vibrant Zócalo or main plaza
  • Enjoy a day trip to the Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán, a Unesco Heritage Site

Claudio Sanchez received his M.A in TESOL from SJSU in 2007 he has both lived and studied abroad extensively and enjoys learning about different cultures as well as studying languages. He currently teaches ESL at CIES -International Gateways.






It is important to note that each program's total cost will vary depending on the location and the package it offers.  

Total Program Cost: $2,185

Included: lodging, two meals each day, scheduled program-related activities and excursions
Not Included: airfare, meals, and personal expenses
