CSU Student Research Competition

The CSU Student Research Competition showcases excellent research conducted by CSU graduate and undergraduate students in the full range of academic programs offered by the CSU. Student participants conduct an oral presentation before juries of professional experts from major corporations, foundations, public agencies, and colleges and universities in California.

Cash prizes are awarded for the best presentations in each category of the competition. In addition, following the competition, selected research summaries are published in Conference Proceedings. Please note that students are encouraged to present and discuss creative projects in the Creative Arts and Design category.

Each CSU campus forwards a maximum of 10 presentations and is free to promote the competition, establish a campus selection process, and screen the final submissions in whatever manner the campus coordinator deems best. Local competitions are held in early spring and local winners nominated to represent the campus in the system-wide competition in early May.

Guidelines

The SJSU Student Research Competition precedes the CSU Student Research Competition and is usually held in March with the CSU competition being held in early May. At the SJSU Research Forum, students are available to discuss their research at a poster session; family and friends are encouraged to attend. The campus announcement of the combined competition may be viewed here for additional information.

SJSU Student Research Competition

Each college may send forward to the Office of Graduate Studies & Research a total of four students (undergraduate and/or graduate) who have done outstanding research or creative activity. The divisions of competition have been arranged to parallel the system-wide procedures, and the judges for the selection are faculty experts within the disciplines. The winners from this competition move forward to the CSU Student Research Competition to be held this coming spring at CSU-Long Beach on May 4 and 5, 2012.

How To Apply

Interested students are encouraged to contact their faculty advisor or department to receive instructions on how to submit their research to the SJSU Student Research Competition to be held on March 7 and 8, 2012, in IRC 101 from 1:30-5:00 pm. Applications are made to the student's college. For each student forwarded from the college to Graduate Studies & Research, a cover sheet and summary of the research (5 pages maximum, double spaced; appendices are separate but should be limited) accompany the nomination. In addition to the application materials indicated above, the students nominated must also download and submit to the Office of GS&R a Permission to Publish form, a Permission to Photograph form, and a Spartan Daily Permission form. These forms are campus-specific documents and available only here.
