The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Overview

Professors tend to think of their specific discipline when identifying research and scholarship projects. Yet, professors spend a lot of time in a "laboratory" that offers many opportunities for research, scholarship and application. That laboratory is for the classroom and the students. When professors treat teaching as thoughtful trial and error, they can better see the research opportunities. What teaching and learning techniques work best and why? What types of evidence can be collected from the classroom? Such research, particularly when also shared and discussed with peers, can help faculty derive new and revised approaches to their teaching and learning work to help students have the best learning opportunities.
