Avian FluFor approximately eight years, health experts and the media have been tracking a growing number of fatalities linked to a new form of avian flu. As of November 13, 2006, the World Health Organization has confirmed 258 cases and 153 deaths linked to the disease. Health officials believe nearly all of these cases resulted from contact with infected birds. However, some experts warn the virus could mutate to facilitate human-to-human transmission, a development that could allow the flu to spread quickly, ultimately afflicting up to 30 percent of the U.S. population. Although no evidence exists that such a mutation has occurred, California State University takes this threat seriously. Chancellor Charles B. Reed has directed each campus to plan accordingly. Under our direction, an SJSU planning committee is developing a detailed pandemic response plan designed to protect the university community while allowing vital services to continue. Student Health Center Director Roger Elrod is overseeing the effort, with assistance from SJSU Police Department Lt. Ron Hackenberg. Should implementing the plan become necessary, the entire campus community will be contacted with updated information and instructions. Meanwhile, if you have any questions about SJSU’s plan, please contact Roger Elrod at 408-924-6112 or relrod@email.sjsu.edu. For the latest on avian flu from the World Health
Organization, please see www.who.int/en. |
