Educational Opportunity Program

EOP is an undergraduate program designed to help students gain access to college, and promote retention and academic success throughout the SJSU career.

History of EOP

The civil rights movements of the 1960s inspired many college students to play an active role in affecting changes within a system that created economic and social barriers. Poverty, discrimination and other socio-economic barriers began to be linked to the lack of higher education opportunities for many minority and socially disadvantaged students.

In April 1969, the California Legislature passed Senate Bill 1072 (the Harmer Bill) which established EOP at the California state institutions of higher learning. More than 38 years later, the EOP program continues to exist, with access provided to first generation, low income, and historically disadvantaged students.

EOP admits California resident students who:

  • Are High School graduates, or the equivalent, and transfer students
  • Meet regular and/or special admission requirements
  • Have a history of being educationally disadvantaged
  • Meet the income guidelines

NOTE: Students who are not yet in EOP may find more information about this program and how to apply at the CSU Mentor EOP webpage. Further questions about the SJSU-specific admission process should be directed to the undergraduate office of Admissions.

EOP will help smooth the transition from your current high school or community college to San José State University by providing:

  • Orientation services and information about the campus and the university
  • Assistance with scheduling classes
  • Exploration of career/major objectives
  • Resolution of personal concerns which affect academic progress
  • Offer academic assistance and support such as tutoring
  • Offer a summer enrichment program prior to the fall semester for eligible students
  • Provide graduate school planning and guidance for EOP juniors and seniors

An EOP student is responsible for the following:

  • Complete a minimum of 12 units per semester with a 2.25 GPA
  • Meet with an academic advisor 3 times per semester
  • Utilize academic support services on campus
  • Maintain current email, local address and phone number on my.sjsu.edu
  • Check with Financial Aid for EOP Grant
