CSU Student Research Competition
The CSU Student Research Competition showcases excellent research conducted by CSU graduate and undergraduate students in the full range of academic programs offered by the CSU. Student participants make oral presentation before juries of professional experts from major corporations, foundations, public agencies, and colleges and universities in California.
Cash prizes are awarded for the best presentations in each category of the competition. In addition, following the competition, selected research summaries are published in Conference Proceedings. Please note that students are encouraged to present and discuss creative projects in the Creative Arts and Design category.
Each CSU campus forwards a maximum of ten presentations and is free to promote the competition, establish a campus selection process, and screen the final submissions in whatever manner the campus coordinator deems best. Local competitions are held in early spring and local winners nominated to represent the campus in the system wide competition present in early May.
Guidelines
The SJSU Research Forum precedes the CSU Student Research Competition and is usually held in March with the CSU competition being held in early May. At the SJSU Research Forum, students will be available to discuss their research at a poster session; family and friends are encouraged to attend.
SJSU Research Forum
Each college may send forward a total of FOUR students (undergraduate or graduate) who have done outstanding research or creative activity. The divisions of competition have been arranged to parallel the system wide procedures and the judges for the selection will be faculty experts within the disciplines. The winners from this competition will then move forward to the CSU Student Research Competition.
How To Apply
Interested students are encouraged to contact your faculty advisor or department to receive instructions on how to submit your research to the SJSU Research Forum held in early March.
For a list of past winners or details on the upcoming SJSU or CSU Research Competition (if available already) visit our CSU Student Research Competition page.

CSU
Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program
The CSU Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) is designed to increase the pool of faculty candidate
with the qualifications, motivation, and skill to teach
the diverse student body in the CSU. The initial emphasis
was to encourage doctoral study in fields in which women
and minorities were most underrepresented. Today applicants
in all fields where CSU campuses employ faculty are eligible
for admission to this program regardless of gender or
ethnicity.
The CDIP will lend participants who are full-time doctoral
students up to $10,000 annually to a limit of $30,000
over a five-year period. The recipients may enroll in
any approved doctoral program, at an accredited university
in the United States or abroad. In addition to the loan
provision, a full-time, tenure-track member of the CSU
faculty formally sponsors participants.
After completion of the doctoral degree, a CDIP participant
is extended a 12-month grace period before loan repayments
begin. If the participant obtains a full-time instructional
faculty position in the CSU, the loan principal and interest
are "forgiven" at the rate of 20% for each year
of service. After five years of full time faculty service,
the entire loan amount can be forgiven. A system wide selection committee, composed of CSU faculty,
campus administrators and Chancellor’s Office administrators
consider the campus nominees.

Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholarship
The Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar program is designed to increase the pool of potential faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of CSU students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. The program emphasizes increasing the number of CSU students who enter graduate programs at one of the University of California institutions.
Selected applicants work closely with a CSU faculty sponsor to develop an overall plan which leads ultimately to enrollment in a doctoral program. In addition, the program provides travel funds, summer internship opportunities and funds for other related activities, such as student membership in professional organizations, graduate school application and test fees, and minor research material costs.
Eligibility for the program requires candidates to be upper division or master’s degree students who are enrolled at a CSU institution in the Spring semester and who will be enrolled at a CSU campus for a least one term of the following academic year. Applicants are selected on the basis of potential for success in completing a doctoral program, probable effectiveness of the student/faculty plan, and level of economic and education disadvantage.
How To Apply
The call for applications occurs in February and selected scholars may expect notification by early summer.
