IRB Reviewer Resources
Training steps for new irb reviewers
The SJSU IRB has an expedited review process in which a single IRB reviewer evaluates a research protocol to determine whether the protection of human subjects in research has been ensured. Full review by all committee members can be selected when needed. To begin reviewing IRB protocols:
Notify the IRB coordinator and the current IRB chair (see contact info below) that you have been appointed to serve on the IRB. The IRB coordinator will provide you with a packet containing samples of previously reviewed protocols and instructions for protocol review.
Complete the online IRB training module and send the IRB coordinator a hardcopy of your training certificate. Make sure that you select the module for IRB reviewers.
Review the SJSU Human Subjects Policy
Review IRB procedures, forms, and related materials on this website.
reviewer availability and irb meetings
Communicate your availability to the IRB coordinator; if you will be out of town for a longer period of time, please notify the coordinator, so that protocols are not sent to you. Keep in mind that extended periods of unavailability result in other reviewers having to take more protocols. Reviewers are expected to return protocols that they have reviewed to the IRB coordinator within 25 business days or sooner.
IRB meetings are usually held once a month. The meeting schedule and location will be determined by the IRB chair, usually at the beginning of the fall semester. Meeting dates will be posted on this page, and a reminder email will be sent out a day prior to the meeting. Please be sure to check your email in case a meeting is canceled.
