Organized Research Units and Institutes

Proposals for New Organized Research and Training Units

The Office of Graduate Studies & Research (GS&R) in conjunction with the GS&R Committee, an official committee of the SJSU Academic Senate, administers the ORTUs in accordance with Executive Order 751 and Academic Senate resolution S05-13.  Proposals for new ORTUs should be sent to the GS&R Committee via the Associate Dean of GS&R.  It is recommended that authors allow sufficient lead time before submission of their proposals for obtaining a preliminary review from the Associate Dean.  Proposals should be organized according to, and follow the stipulations contained within, the ORU Guidelines below.  A budget template is included with the Guidelines to be used for reporting a 5-year financial estimate.  Once received, the proposals will be reviewed by the Associate Dean and the GS&R Committee with reference to the ORU Checklist, also included with the Guidelines.

Annual and Five-Year Reporting

After an initial two-year probationary period, ORU directors are required to submit annual reports and five-year reports, usually early in the fall semester. On the fifth year following a five-year review, both an annual and new five-year report are due. Each report must be accompanied by a budget report for the period covered. They should be sent to the Graduate Studies & Research Committee in care of the Office of Graduate Studies & Research. The forms can be found at the following links.

List of Organized Research and Training Units

San José State has over 40 research units and facilities that partner industry with academic research to enhance technology, encourage development of new products, and improve education.

Bay Area Retail Center
Consists of a multilateral partnership between SJSU students, retail industry partners, and SJSU faculty, administration, and staff.  A program of Center-sponsored events brings constituents together in an effort to provide co-curricular, experiential learning opportunities designed to build students’ leadership skills as well as their awareness and knowledge about retailing as a career destination.

Biotechnology Education and Research Institute (no link available)
Directs the development of biotechnology through inter-departmental cooperation and serves as a clearinghouse and promotes cooperation between industry, government, and the university in biotechnology research and development. Contact the College of Science for more information.

Biodiversity Center
Furthers the conservation of biodiversity and promotes stewardship of natural resources through education, outreach, and research.

Bureau of Administration of Justice
Supports research into crime and criminal justice through analysis and evaluation of existing problems and operations.

Center for Applied Mathematics, Computation, and Statistics
Provides an innovative educational program to develop training through practical experience.

Center for Asian Studies
Provides information and counsel about studies in Asia.

Center for Banking and Financial Services
The mission of the Center is to provide an important complementary component to students’ curricular education in the area of financial intermediation. One of its major goals is to create a link between SJSU students and the banking and financial services sector. By promoting professional development events, the Center will provide students with opportunities to interact with professionals. Another major goal is to provide value to the college and university by enhancing the students’ knowledge of financial topics. In fact, the Center sponsors presentations and lectures focusing on topics related to financial intermediation. Finally, the Center rewards excellence among students and faculty members by providing financial support through scholarships and research grants.

Center for Comparative Philosophy
Aims at promoting and enhancing the research and scholarship in comparative philosophy, the concerns of which cut across different disciplines as well as different areas of philosophy, for the sake of contributing to the academic mission of SJSU and the international scholarship of comparative philosophy.

Center for Development of Recycling
A national clearinghouse for recycling information and for applied waste management research aimed to increase the scope and availability of recycling information and to increase the effectiveness of recycling as a solid waste management strategy.

Center for Human Language Technology
Supports the study of computational linguistics, acts as a resource for Silicon Valley technology industries, and explores applications of human language technology in industry, education, and society at large.

Center for Human Services Research and Development
Focuses on human services development through behavioral science applications in the community and curriculum.

Center for International Sport and Human Performance
Promotes and facilitates cross-national and cross-cultural interaction of individuals and their ideas in the context of sport and human performance.

Center for Literary Arts
Provides programs featuring major contemporary writers, poets, and scholars.

Center for Reaching and Teaching the Whole Child furthers the Connie L. Lurie College of Education's mission of fostering excellence and equity in our schools by focusing attention on the social-emotional dimension of teaching and learning and its relationship to academic achievement. The Center collaborates with professional education programs for teachers, administrators, and school counselors; K-12 schools; Bay Area resource program providers; and parents to raise awareness, advance research, and encourage practice in schools that reflects the current knowledge base about the social-emotional dimension of learning and its implications for educational practice.

Collaborative for Disaster Mitigation
A proactive partnership of the public, private, and academic sectors to encourage and facilitate implementation of mitigation measures to minimize the consequences of natural and other disasters.

Global Leadership Advancement Center
Housed in SJSU’s College of Business and Lucas Graduate School, its mission is advancing, fostering, and disseminating cutting-edge knowledge on global leadership and its development via diverse programs for scholars, students, and the community. GLAC has two innovative student programs unique to San Jose State: the GLLab, which is an assessment center for global competencies, and the Global Leadership Passport Program, a co-curricular program in which students earn stamps for activities that prepare them for global work. GLAC's Social Innovation Initiative leverages the symbiotic relationship among San José State University, social entrepreneurs, the City of San José, foundations, and other innovation organizations to encourage and train people to apply technology and innovation for the good of the local community.

Institute for Metropolitan Studies
Facilitates the exchange of knowledge and expertise regarding urban problems and critical matters related to metropolitan development.

Institute for Modern Optics
Facilitates communication, collaboration, and coordination in the area of lasers and optics and promotes research projects in non-linear effects at surfaces, laser beam characteristics, two-wave laser mixing, holography, light emission from thin film tunnels, and laser spectroscopy; contact the Physics Department for more information.

Institute for Nursing Research and Practice
Promotes the climate of inquiry within the School of Nursing by coordinating and promoting research projects and interests of nursing faculty in order to develop innovative models for nursing research, practice, and education.

Institute for Social Responsibility
Facilitates the planning and coordination of research-related activities concerned with issues of professional and business ethics.

Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies
The only research facility and document repository in North America dedicated solely to the study of the life of and performance of the works of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Martha Heasley Cox Steinbeck Research Center
Houses one of the most extensive collections of the Nobel Prize-winning author's manuscripts, letters, photographs and artifacts, fostering research concerning the life and work of the author.

Materials Characterization and Metrology Center
Provides materials imaging and chemical analysis capabilities for applications in various fields of science and engineering. Instruments are located in various buildings across campus.

Microscale Process Engineering Center
A laboratory facility for the fabrication and testing of microelectronic devices, photovoltaics (solar cells), microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and other applications utilizing thin film deposition, etching, and photolithography.

Mineta Transportation Institute
Focuses on international surface transportation policy issues as related to three primary responsibilities: research, education, and technology transfer. MTI receives policy oversight from an internationally respected board of trustees who represent all of the major transportation modes.

Pacific Rim Institute (no link available)
Promotes and facilitates cooperative research and scholarly projects between the University and countries bordering the Pacific Ocean. Contact the College of Applied Sciences and Arts for more information.

Research Institute for Foster Youth Initiatives
Explores ways to eliminate barriers that current and former foster youth face in obtaining a suitable education. Research initiated through this institute will examine how to identify those factors that limit education for this special population, and identify strategies to mitigate those limitations. Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurship
Promotes effective entrepreneurship through knowledge creation, knowledge dissemination, collaborative partnerships and outreach activities.

Silicon Valley Center for Global Studies (formerly the Silicon Valley Center for Global Innovation and Immigration)
Conducts research on immigration matters in Northern California, recruits and supports interdisciplinary teams of researchers, hosts international visiting scholars, and provides training in cross-cultural competencies for corporate and nonprofit clients.

Sourisseau Academy
Promotes better understanding of California's state and local history, with an emphasis on the history of Santa Clara Valley, through graduate scholarships and collections of historical source materials.

Spartan Film Studios
A unique creative/artistic instructional program and innovative production facility operating in Silicon Valley. Since its inception in 2005, Spartan Film Studios has provided university students, under the direction of expert instructors and industry professionals, a full range of film production experience that has resulted in multiple feature length and short subject films.

Survey and Policy Research Institute
Engages distinguished academic expertise in survey and research design, implementation, and data interpretation to deliver thorough and exacting analysis and state-of-the-art consulting services to its clients.

Art Metal Facility
Allows casting and fabricating large-scale sculptures in bronze, aluminum, iron and steel.

Aviation Facility
Provides hands-on aviation operation and maintenance experience from its classroom, laboratory, and hanger facility at San José.

Biological Sciences Research Collections
Include entomology, herpetology, vertebrate and invertebrate museums and the Carl Sharsmith Herbarium.

Carl W. Sharsmith Herbarium
A 15,000 sheet herbarium that consists largely of California native plants. Dr. Sharsmith made the final determination of each species and personally mounted each one so that key characteristics are easily seen.

Chicano Resource Center and Library
Contains a collection of books, periodicals, reference tools, pamphlets and clippings relating to the Chicano experience and farm workers' struggle.

Computers in Art, Design, Research and Education Institute
Develops experimental applications of computer technology in fine art and design; provides state-of-the-art computer facilities for art/design instruction; explores applications of interactive media to education and stimulates industry sponsorship of visualization and interactive systems research.

Electro-Acoustical Studios
Offer undergraduate music students access to digital synthesizers.

Engineering Laboratories
The College of Engineering is closely linked to Silicon Valley industry through its many relationships with local high-tech companies. It is through their generous support that the College is able to offer a wide range of student scholarships, enhanced academic programs, special programs and state-of-the art hands-on laboratories.

Phyllis Forward Simpkins International House
A large colonial residence hall a block from campus that is home to foreign-born and native-born students interested in widening their international experience.

Journalism Laboratories
Includes the newsroom of the Spartan Daily and the studios of KSJS-FM and television's Update News, providing applied experience in specific media; contact the Journalism Department for more details.

Meteorology Facility
Combines theoretical and practical concepts to prepare students for graduate studies, or for careers in forecasting, applied meteorology, or research.

Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
Provides access to the geologically and biologically important Monterey Bay Canyon and to some of the world's richest ocean and salt marsh research areas. The laboratories are served by the deep-sea research ship Point Sur.

National Biometric Test Center
Has explored a number of essential questions relating to the science underpinning biometric technologies. These include suggesting a taxonomy of biometrics, thus laying the groundwork for a common language for us to use when discussing biometrics.

Nuclear Science Facility
The only radiochemistry lab in the western world available for both graduate and undergraduate classes.

Science Education Resource Materials Center
Makes available educational aids to student teachers for science classes, including live fauna and geological models.

SGI Animation Lab
Involves partnerships with a number of other schools and corporations and has received national coverage in Animation World, and the Chronicle of Higher Education; contact the School of Art and Design for more information.

Speech and Hearing Center
An on-campus multilingual audiology and speech pathology community clinic.
