 Jerry works closely with SJSU colleges and faculty to develop research initiatives, infrastructure and research careers. His activities focus upon (1) improving the research culture, (2) coaching faculty in the pursuit of grant funding (particularly governmental and national foundation), and (3) building community. He partners with SJSU’s faculty development center, its Research and Tower foundations, instituting an ongoing supportive research environment.

 While at SJSU, Jerry has co-authored Building Research Culture and Infrastructure (Oxford Press, 2012), and co-edited Advances in Developing Research Capacity in Social Work (Special Issue Social Work Research, 2008). He served as a senior social and behavioral scientist for the Office of Behavioral Sciences and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH, 1998-2007), and as a professor of social work at Catholic University (visiting professor- 1987—90), University of Arkansas- Little Rock (1977-87), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1972-77). During his academic years, he authored over 100 peer reviewed publications, and served as a principal investigator and/or research scientist on federal, state and foundation grants. He was the CEO/clinical director of an addiction treatment center (1989—1999). The treatment of addictive disorders has been the focus of his clinical research, publication and private practice career.
