Student Training Opportunities
Training for Human Subjects Research
CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative)
San Jose State University has contracted with CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) to provide tutorials to the SJSU community on responsible conduct in research.
A student training module for conducting research involving human subjects is available through CITI. The training for students is recommended but not mandatory, unless it is part of a class assignment or the student is receiving federal funding for the research. Students should be aware that the sponsoring professor that signs off on their IRB protocols must have completed the training requirement. If the professor has previously completed the training, it is not necessary to include the certificate with every student IRB application.
Human Subjects Institutional Review Board (IRB) Workshop
The online IRB workshop describes everything students need to know about the IRB process, including when IRB approval is needed, how long it takes to get approval for different kinds of research, and what kinds of forms are needed. The workshop also covers ethical considerations for work involving human subjects as research participants.
The online thesis workshop is for students who are completing a Plan A Master's Thesis or a Plan C Creative Project for their culminating experience requirement. The workshop provides an overview of the life cycle of a thesis, common errors, publishing options, and a sample thesis.
