To help familiarize students with the thesis review process, SJSU requirements, and to answer students' questions, the Office of Graduate Studies offers a thesis workshop in the Fall and Spring semesters. The thesis workshop covers procedures, deadlines, required materials, and basic formatting rules. The schedule for the upcoming semester is as follows:

Please check this website at the beginning of each semester for updates regarding the times and location of the thesis workshop. If you are unable to attend you may also download the PowerPoint presentation: Steps to Completing Your Master’s Thesis.

Thesis Announcements

Transitioning to a Paperless System

San Jose State University is in the process of transitioning to a paperless system for accepting the final version of SJSU master’s theses approved by the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. GS&R will continue to review a paper version of each thesis initially submitted by the posted deadline in order to determine whether each thesis meets University standards. The following changes apply to the last stage of the thesis review process:

As of Fall 2009, the MLK Library will no longer be processing three copies of the thesis for binding.  For Fall 2009 students are instructed to submit one paper copy of the final thesis after it has been approved by Graduate Studies and Research along with the forms and payments outlined on the thesis binding checklist. GS&R will forward the final copy to the library for binding.

In Spring 2010, the final version of the thesis approved by GS&R will be submitted electronically. Please check this website in late January 2010 for updated guidelines, forms, instructions, and a link to the electronic thesis administrator.

A bound paper version of the thesis will no longer be provided to departments. Full text versions of the thesis will be available through the external publisher, ProQuest, as well as through the MLK Library's online electronic repository.

It is important that students and faculty check this website each semester for the latest instructions and guidelines, as failure to submit the thesis as instructed may result in a delay in graduation.

The Outstanding Thesis Award

Two Outstanding Thesis Awards of $500 are presented personally by the President of SJSU at Commencement each May. SJSU allows each College to select only one thesis to be sent forward for consideration. Students with degrees awarded in May of the year of award are eligible, as well as those with degree dates from the immediately past May, August, and December. Prior May degree recipients are included so that high quality work completed too late for the past year's selection process can participate. Only Plan A Theses qualify for this award.

How To Apply

Interested students are encouraged to contact your faculty advisor or department early in the Spring, as your thesis must be nominated by your College.
