Standards for Subject Matter Preparation Programs for prospective teachers are established by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). Admission to a teacher credential program requires demonstration of subject matter competence. This can be done by completing a CCTC-approved program and/or passing a set of state approved tests.

SJSU has CCTC approved programs for prospective secondary teachers in the eight subjects listed below. Completion of one of these programs demonstrates subject matters competence in these teaching fields.

  • Art
  • English
  • French
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Science
  • Social Science
  • Spanish

SJSU also has a CCTC-approved program for prospective elementary teachers. Completion of one of the following majors does not eliminate the need to pass California state-approved tests but does prepare for teaching in a self-contained classroom and prepares for the state tests. The majors are in

  • Child and Adolescent Development
  • Creative Arts
  • Environmental Studies
  • Liberal Studies
  • Natural Science
  • Social Science
