Applying to the MPH Distance Format

Applying to the MPH Distance Format

New students are admitted only once a year. The 24-month distance MPH format operates year-round. Students begin in early August. Applicants may only apply to either the campus or distance option, not both. All the information you need to complete your campus admissions application is contained in the SJSU  MPH Admissions Packet [pdf]

Applications for Fall 2015 will be accepted starting October 1, 2014 and the application deadline dates are February 1st for Early Admission decisions,  April 1st for Regular Admission decisions, and June 1, 2015 for Late Admission decisions (on a space available basis only). Please note that two separate applications are required: one to the university and the other to the MPH program.

MPH admissions decisions are based on several factors, including academic preparation, work experience, commitment to public health, potential for contribution to the field, and the overall quality of the application. Applicants are notified about Early Admission decisions in late February . Regular Admissions applicants will be notified beginning some time in late March through the end of June.

Our goal is to admit a cohort of approximately 25 highly dedicated individuals who are ready for graduate work and committed to the principles and approaches of community health education, advocacy, and health promotion. We particularly value diversity, practical community or health education experience, strong academic skills, and upper division course work in the social sciences.

Tuition

Total tuition for the Fall 2014 cohort is $24,150 for the 42-unit program, at a rate of $575 per unit. This rate is fixed for the cohort admitted in Fall 2014, throughout their 42-unit program, barring any possible state or university mandated tuition increases prior to admission. If a fee increase is necessary prior to enrollment in the first course, the new rate will implemented but will be honored for the entire 42-unit period, regardless of any subsequent state tuition increases. The instructional fees do not include the cost of books and travel to SJSU (3 trips). The tuition is the same regardless of in-state, out-of-state, or international residency. The tuition is considerably lower than other CEPH accredited MPH Programs.

Domestic U.S. Applicants

For the purpose of admission, domestic applicants are all U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and all visa holders that are not applying for or currently hold an F-1 or J-1 visa (example: H1b, H4, refugee etc.). Follow the steps described in "Domestic Applicants: How to Apply" for instructions on how to apply to the university.

International Applicants

International Students and Distance Learning: Under U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) rules (Revised effective 1/1/03; 67 FR 76256), F-1 visa students cannot be accepted to the SJSU MPH distance program because all MPH course are delivered online and F-1 students cannot enroll in more than one online class (or three credits) per session.

Please visit our International Applicants page to get information on application procedures tailored specifically for our international applicants.

MPH Information Meetings

If you are interested in applying to our MPH program, we encourage you to attend one of our MPH Information meetings. As we are not able to hold private meetings with potential applicants, this is the best place to meet faculty and students and also get answers to many of your admissions questions.  Click here for a list of meeting dates and times, offered on campus and online. Please note that due to severe weather conditions, the MPH Information Meeting for December 11, 2014 has been cancelled.
