Health Science Minor Options

a Minor in Complementary and Alternative Health Practices (CAHP)

The minor in Complementary and Alternative Health Practices (CAHP) is a five-course (15 unit) introduction to understanding health, healing, and wellness from perspectives

Students who select this minor are required to take HPRF 134 (Complementary & Alternative Health Practices) and HPRF 135 (Health Issues in a Multicultural Society).  Additionally, students must take one of the following three courses: BIOL054 (Human Understanding – core GE, area E), PHIL 111 (Medical Ethics), or ANTH 108 (Medical Anthropology).   Students will fulfill the remaining units for the minor by selecting six (6) units of electives spanning any two of the areas listed on the Approved Electives for Minor in CAHP.  

Minor in Gerontology

The minor in Gerontology is a five-course (15 unit) introduction to the social, demographic, economic, health, and policy perspectives on aging.  Students who select this minor are required to complete GERO/HS 107 (Aging and Society), GERO/HS 108 (Health in Later Life), GERO/HS 117 (Social Policies and Services in Aging), 120 hours of fieldwork, and one elective from an approved list of Gerontology electives.  The minor in Gerontology is appropriate for students from any major who wish to learn more about aging, health, and social policy in California and the U.S.  Students pursuing a major in Health Science who wish to pursue a minor in Gerontology are instead encouraged to pursue Option 3, a B.S. in Health Science with a Concentration in Gerontology.

Minor in Health Professions

The minor in Health Professions is a five-course (15 unit) introduction to the varied professional pathways to support culturally diverse individuals and communities on the path to health. Students who pursue this minor must take HPRF 135 (Health Issues in a Multicultural Society) Students will fulfill the remaining units for the minor by selecting twelve (12) units of electives across any three of the areas listed on Approved Electives for Minor in Health Professions.  The minor in Health Professions is appropriate for students from any major who wish to gain exposure to multiple, different professional perspectives on health, healing, and wellness.  Students pursuing a major in Health Science are not able to select this minor because there are not enough distinct courses available to them.

Minor in Health Science

The minor in Health Science is a five-course (15 unit) introduction to the public health perspective.  Students who select this minor are required to complete the following five classes: HS 001 (Understanding Your Health), GERO/HS 107 (Aging and Society), HS 104 (Community Health Promotion), HS 161 (Epidemiology), and HS 162(Health Care Organization and Administration).  The minor in Health Science is appropriate for students from any major who wish to learn more about the healthcare system in the U.S. and the role of communities in promoting health.
