This paper will identify some key characteristics in firm strategy and business behavior of Chinese firms. The specific institutional environment in China has contributed to the formation and development of certain business characteristics, which have both advantages and disadvantages compared to western practices. Three Chinese firms will be analyzed in this paper to show how the identified characteristics have contributed to the success or failure of these businesses. While western firms need to learn to adapt to the China context when they do business there, Chinese firms must familiarize themselves with the different market environment once they go global.
