Abstract

“Capability development in complex environments: Evidence from the Chinese telecom equipment industry”. Leading local firms in the Chinese telecom equipment industry such as ZTE, Huawei, and Datang have emerged as first tier players in the world in new technology development and/or in market share. This happened in complex environments (for example, the domestic market is highly open and local firms have to compete with industry leaders when they were  very small and had little “core competencies”). In this paper, we explore the patterns of capability development in complex environments.
