A note from the chairWelcome to the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences |

|
The Department of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences is committed to training students who will assume leadership roles in education, public policy, and non-profit organizations. Our department is distinctive in its interdisciplinary approach to understanding, analyzing and critiquing the historical, social, political, economic, and cultural condition of women and people of color in our local community, California, the U.S. and globally. The department is committed to race/ethnic, class and gender equitable learning, teaching and community engagement. The department's central mission is to prepare prospective teachers to work in elementary and secondary public school classrooms. The Social Science Multiple and Single Subject Teacher Preparation majors are the only California Commission on Teacher Preparation (CCTC) approved courses of study in the College of Social Sciences at San Jose State University. Our department is committed to providing a solid foundation in interdisciplinary social science. The complex social issues teachers and students confront require that they have the ability to analyze and critique the myriad of problems affecting schools from multiple perspectives. Furthermore, it is our goal to prepare teachers who will be well prepared to excel in classrooms that are increasingly heterogeneous in terms of race/ethnicity. Our classes focus on educational issues relevant to the growing diversity that exists in our schools. The Social Science Multiple and Single Subject Teacher Preparation majors are the only California Commission on Teacher Preparation (CCTC) approved courses of study in the College of Social Sciences... Our topical emphasis majors, Asian American Studies, Women's Studies, Public Policy and Social Change and Comparative Studies on Race/Ethnicity, Class and Gender, emphasize the critical perspective we feel is necessary to effectively engage in leadership in our complex society. No one single discipline can provide students with the skills and knowledge to navigate the social, political, economic, historical and cultural issues they will confront in the twenty-first century. Each major provides a unique perspective on the critical issues facing our society today. An internship culminates the course of study linking theory to practice. This site describes more about our programs, curriculum, goals, and procedures. If you have questions, please call or come by our office on the second floor of Dudley Moorhead Hall, room 239A. We look forward to meeting you! Sincerely,
