Maintenance

Websites aren’t digital filing cabinets of infinite space. They require ongoing work to keep information organized and up to date. Like a garden, a website needs to be maintained with careful consideration through regular pruning and maintenance tasks.

When you review your website, keep an eye out for these common problems:

Accessibility

  • Wordy or complicated language
  • Lack of headings
  • Heading elements used out of order
  • Images without proper alt text
  • Images with embedded text (for example: flyers)
  • Non-descriptive link text
  • Tables used for layout instead of data
  • Inaccessible downloadable documents (pdfs, PowerPoint presentations, etc)

Usability

  • Broken links
  • Typos
  • Outdated/stale content
  • Images that are too high resolution (more than 1 MB)
  • Content duplicated in multiple places

Branding

  • Blurry images
  • Too much “stock photography”
  • Non-original content
  • Usage of copyrighted materials
  • Custom logos
  • Misuse of marks
  • Inconsistent voice and tone
