Applying for SJSU Scholarships

Scholarships come from a number of different sources, including SJSU, private industry, and alumni. Awards are generally based on scholastic achievement and financial need. All students are encouraged to apply for as many scholarships as possible, to lessen their need for loans or part time work to attend school.

  • SJSU has over 900 general and departmental scholarships available, ranging from $100 to $2,500 per year. About half of these are awarded by the SJSU Scholarship Committee and half by the various academic departments on campus.

  • To apply for scholarships awarded by the SJSU Financial Aid and Scholarship Office, students must have at least 12 undergraduate or 6 graduate units completed at SJSU with at least a 3.0 GPA. A few scholarships have a lower GPA requirement, and will state the minimum in the criteria.

  • For information about the scholarships administered by SJSU's academic departments, students should contact their departments directly. These scholarships each have their own specific criteria, deadlines and application instructions. Note that you can apply for many departmental scholarships even after the deadline that applies to other SJSU scholarships.

  • The SJSU Scholarship Office will be offering several scholarships that have Distinct Qualifications; they are based on qualities such as leadership, community service, hardship and academic achievement in addition to financial need.

  • As mentioned above, scholarships come from a number of different sources. It can take some time and effort on your behalf to research them all. There are businesses that offer to do this work for you for a fee, but we do not recommend these services. Scholarship information is available for free from FastWeb. (Financial Aid Search Through the WEB), which has a database of over 400,000 scholarships. There are also numerous scholarships that are not based on the SJSU General Application. These are Private Scholarships and have their own applications and criteria. Make sure you file a FAFSA because some of these scholarships require that you be rejected from Federal Aid in order to qualify.
