If your job requires you to drive a state vehicle, you need to meet several requirements including maintaining a good driving record and taking a defensive driving class. To request use of State vehicles, complete our Application for University Vehicle Operation/Authorization form (PDF).
If you drive your privately owned vehicle on state business, you need to submit an Authorization to Use Privately Owned Vehicles on State Business form (STD 261) (PDF)
to your Department Supervisor each year. You also need to:
Be advised that any insurance on your private vehicle will be primary and the University's will be excess. There is no physical damage (comprehensive and collision) coverage.
This course is required for all employees driving state vehicles and/or driving privately owned vehicles on state business. For details, see the Defensive Driving Program.

University vehicles and university business driving are insured for liability to others by the Office of Risk and Insurance Management (ORIM) in Sacramento. There is no insurance that covers damage to the vehicle. When the other driver is at fault for an accident, the other driver or their insurance company pays for the vehicle damage repair for the State owned university vehicle. ORIM claim adjusters assist with vehicle damage recovery efforts when the other party is at fault for the accident.
If you have an accident, no matter how small, follow our Motor Vehicle Accidents State Driver Reporting Procedures (PDF) and complete our Vehicle Accident Report form (STD 270) (PSD).
