Welcome to the Department of Health Science and Recreation.
We have grown! As of Fall 2013, we are now the Department of Health Science and Recreation. Our mission is to prepare innovative leaders and practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities to promote health and engage with, understand, and improve the environments in which we live, work and play. Our focus is communities and populations, and the people, policies, environments, resources, supports and opportunities that create the conditions for health for all.
This is a very exciting time in Health Science and Recreation. Our experienced faculty members are involved in exciting research and community projects. Our students are diverse, lively, and deeply engaged in the classroom and the community.
The Health Science and Recreation Department's innovative programs include Salud Familiar en McKinley (a partnership with McKinley Elementary School), the SJSU Peer Health Education Program, and Project SHINE. We welcome annual visits by artisans from Arrazola, Mexico and offer international trips for course credit (Summer 2014 to Paris!). We also offer special events on throughout the year, such as the Sexual Diversity Program, the Nyswander Lecture, Careers in Aging Week, a Global Health event, and lots of opportunities for networking and professional development.
In Health Science and Recreation, we commit to living with joy and purpose, even when times are tough. We look forward to all that is before us!
