A Research to Practice Model

At the IEE at San Jose State Unversity's Lurie College of Education, we:

• Partner with K-14 schools and districts to provide customized professional learning that promotes equity and access
• Use a collaborative, emancipatory model with faculty experts who center historically marginalized learners
• Facilitate systems-level pedagogical and organizational transformation

Why use a research to practice model?

• Systems-level reform requires coherent and aligned efforts (Cohen & Mehta, 2017)
• Effective PD draws on internal assets, is context-specific, and research-based (Welton et al., 2018)
• Most diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings are one-off episodes conducted by outsiders, which ais to promote sutained inquiry into practice (Pollock & Matschiner, 2022)
• Excessive attention to equity mindsets prior to taking action can inhibit change efforts (Ishimaru & Galloway, 2021)
• "Strong equity... requires collaboration among diverse stakeholderrs to first recognize and then confront the reproduction of inequities through the everyday structural and systemic aspects of schools [and] school systems" (Eddy Spicer & Gomez, 2022, p. 90)

Research-Practice Partnership Services

• What is RPP?

  • Research Practice Partnerships are:

    
    1. Long-term, open-ended commitments sustained across multiple projects
    2. Partnerships seek to address problems of practice identified primarily by practitioners themselves
    3. Mutualistic collaborations that dialogically share authority, identify research focus areas, establish norms and routines for generative relationships, and build capacity among practitioners to design and apply research for themselves.
    4.  Collaborations that collect and analyze original data, sometimes using innovative analytic techniques generated within the partnership

• IEE Engagement

  • The IEE aspires to build meaningful, long-term research-practice partnerships with local stakeholders (see the About Us tab of this website for more information about our approach). Of course, we also realize that not every community partner is in a position to undertake such an endeavor and that sometimes a more short-term and immediate need must be addressed. The IEE also offers technical assistance with a range of options, including but not limited to:

          - Equity audits and collaborative problem-posing conversations
            to identify problems of practice and identify a research base
            with possible solutions
          - Program evaluations
          - Individual or multiple sessions of collaboratively designed
            professional development for educators and administrators,
            with or without ongoing coaching.

    Whether engaging the IEE for a full-fledged research practice partnership or for more limited technical assistance, community partners can opt to contract through the IEE to pay for release time for project-affiliated faculty or to pay a stipend to those faculty that respects their time, effort, and expertise. The IEE also charges an administrative fee (based on the scope and duration of a partnership) for program staff who can oversee budgeting, grant timelines, and the like. The IEE also asks that partners remunerate personnel on their end who are brought into projects if these are outside the scope of their existing roles.
