Master of Public Administration

Our Mission

Our mission is to prepare graduate students, principally in-service professionals, to perform the work of public service and to advance in their careers, especially in Bay Area governments, largely by fostering their knowledge and skills in management and leadership; diversity, equity and inclusion; program, policy, and budgetary analysis; and socializing them in professional, democratic, and constitutional values, ethics and practices; To advance the state of knowledge in public administration and inform our own instruction through scholarly and applied research; and to serve and support public administration and the community of the Silicon Valley and beyond by providing expertise and engaging in professional activity.

San Jose State Unversity's Master of Public Administration program admits about 45 students total in two groups: fall and spring of each year. There are about 125 students in the program. Most students are fulltime working adults who attend classes parttime, with about 25% of the students attending fulltime. The program is fully in person, and each class meets one night per week, on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, from 6:00 pm to 8:45 pm. Fulltime students can complete the degree in as few as four semesters. Parttime students generally finish in eight semesters, but may have up to seven years to complete the 11 courses and the final project.
