The Higher Education Teaching Certificate program provides graduate-level coursework and classroom experience to prepare current and future higher education instructors in culturally-sustaining and responsive pedagogical knowledge grounded in social justice, equity, and inclusion.

If you’re a current MA/MS student or faculty member in a postsecondary institution, this certificate is for you. The program offers a well-rounded experience that integrates theory and teaching practicum.

Program Features

  • Hybrid Instruction: Foundations and methods courses are offered in an online 7-week summer format. The practicum course will be offered during the fall semester with online lectures and on-site teaching and observation activities.
  • Unique Program: Focused on culturally-sustaining and responsive pedagogical knowledge grounded in social justice, equity, and inclusion.
  • Exceptional Faculty: The faculty of the Department of Educational Leadership have extensive experience in equity-minded pedagogy and emancipatory leadership practices, with a commitment to being community-engaged, culturally sustaining and holistic in their teaching.

Career Opportunities

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of postsecondary teachers is projected to grow 12% between 2020 - 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. About 139,600 openings for postsecondary teachers are projected each year, on average, over the decade.


Required Courses

Students will complete 2 online courses during the summer and 1 hybrid course during the fall. Courses include:

  • A foundation course that examines the development and knowledge of theories related to diversity, equity and inclusion in U.S. higher education.
  • A teaching methods course grounded in culturally-sustaining pedagogies.
  • A teaching fieldwork experience where students will put into practice culturally-sustaining and responsive teaching methodologies.

Applying to the Program

  • Apply through Cal State Apply
  • Current MA/MS students (at a non-CSU campus) or faculty members in a postsecondary institution are eligible to apply.
  • Applications will be accepted once a year, starting November 1 and with an April 3 deadline.
