CPP PolyTeach 2020: Do the Flip!

March 6th, 2020, Bronco Student Center at Cal Poly Pomona

PolyTeach 2020: Do the Flip!  focuses on “flipping” the classroom to help students to learn better, succeed better, and to have a sense of classroom community.

The program will feature talks from Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Los Angeles faculty in STEM and STEM-related fields.  These faculty participated in a Department of Education “First in the World” grant to investigate how flipping could contribute to student success in core STEM and STEM-related courses.  We also have a short workshop on how to write a “guided practice,” a document that helps students to do the class preparation which is critical for making flipping work.

The event included talks from Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State LA, and San Jose State faculty who have flipped their course. The 2020 Wall of COOL awards were conferred. The keynote by Dr. Kevin Kelly, “Designing Flipped Courses for Learning Equity”, focused on ensuring that flipping is an inclusive teaching strategy rather than one that perpetuates imbalances. The event wrapped up with “speed-teching” to quickly introduce people to different technologies that support flipping.

More than 170 faculty and staff from Cal Poly Pomona, CSU LA, and other southern California universities including UC Merced, Azusa Pacific University, University of Southern California, California Baptist University, CSU San Bernardino, Western University, UC Riverside, and CSU Fullerton.
