This page gives you general information the university's main e-mail systems. Information about how to apply for a San Jose State University E-mail account is here.
The first step is to determine which type of university e-mail account you have. The quick way to find out is to look at your e-mail address. The best clue to determining this is what immediately follows the "@" sign in your e-mail address.
The types of university wide e-mail accounts are:
University e-mail (Lotus Notes) accounts are for employees of San Jose State University. E-Mail addresses for these accounts end in "@sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.) These accounts are typically a user's first name and last name seperated by a period. So, for a hypothetical user named Jane Doe the e-mail address might be "jane.doe@sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.) If this is the type of account you have, please follow the options shown below, appropriate for a University E-mail (Lotus Notes) account. In this, and following examples, it should be noted there are deviations from this standard. No two people can have the same e-mail address so if there were two people named Jane Doe they must have different e-mail addresses. In these cases additional attributes are added to the name to ensure uniqueness.
SJSU UNIX accounts are no longer issued for e-mail at SJSU. However, some employees still have these accounts from the old days when this was the main e-mail system at SJSU. E-mail addresses for these accounts end in "@email.sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.) These accounts are typically the first letter of a user's first name and the users last name. There is an eight character limit to a user's user name, so long names must be truncated. So, for a hypothetical user named Jane Doe the e-mail address might be "jdoe@email.sjsu.edu" (without the quotation marks.) If this is the type of account you have, please follow the options shown below, appropriate for a SJSU UNIX account.
San Jose State University, through partnership with Microsoft Live Edu, provides a feature-rich, intuitive electronic mail environment to the Student community. Only students may use this e-mail system. Popular features include web and POP3 client access, online file sharing and storage, blogging, 5GB of storage, and account pickup and management through SJSU's SJSUOne application.
Every active SJSU Student has an SJSUOne account, University Computing and Telecommunications (UCAT) Systems Group has alsogenerated a SJSU Student E-Mail address for each active Student.

Note: this information does not affect official staff/faculty e-mail, or the official staff/faculty address (Firstname.Lastname@sjsu.edu).
SJSU does not, at this time, provide e-mail addresses to students prior to enrollment. It is the official policy and practice for SJSU to use the preferred e-mail address (which may be selected or modified in MySJSU) when communicating to all applicants and students via e-mail. By default, the preferred e-mail for incoming applicants is the self-reported e-mail provided on their CSU Mentor application. In addition, important communication is often sent to applicants and students via MySJSU. Please make sure to check your MySJSU account frequently for new messages.
Some organizational units at the university provide their own e-mail services. If your e-mail address ends in something other than the two examples above, these clients are not supported by this help desk. But, the university help desk can help you find out who does support those accounts. University accounts like SJSUOne and MySJSU do not have e-mail services associated with them at this time.
