CPGE Article Processing Charges (APCs)

  • Purpose: To help offset article processing charges for publishing in peer-reviewed open-access publications.
  • Eligibility:
    • CPGE has a pool of limited funds to pay for APC support.
    • All tenured/tenure-track faculty and full-time lecturers (including .8s) in CPGE are eligible for these RSCA supports.
    • Awards are made on a first come first served basis until funds are exhausted.
    • Check the SJSU Library first to see if an agreement is in place to allow the library to cover the cost of open-access publishing for SJSU faculty.
    • New faculty should have used their new faculty funds from the MLK Library prior to applying for funding from CPGE.
    • Faculty who receive start-up funds must have fully expended their start-up funds prior to applying for funding from CPGE.
    • Be aware of characteristics of predatory journals.
  • Support Amount:
    • Faculty can request up to $2,000 (to fund ~3 awards in FY23/24).
  • Application Form:
    • Faculty need to have first contacted the SJSU Scholarly Communications Librarian about ways to reduce/waive the APC and confirmed that the requested amount is the amount needed to publish the manuscript.  Faculty need to provide a 200-word explanation about why the selected open-access peer-reviewed journal/publication is the most appropriate venue for publishing the manuscript. The submitted request will first go to the department chair for review, and then will be routed to the Associate Dean for Academics for final approval.
