Academic Regalia
San José State University and the Spartan Bookstore, in partnership with Herff Jones, are elevating the commencement tradition with custom graduation regalia featuring official SJSU colors and university marks, designed exclusively for our graduates. SJSU graduates will now celebrate their academic achievements in bold Royal Blue, a color that reflects Spartan pride. As our graduates cross the stage, they stand out in attire that reflects the spirit and tradition of San José State.
All students participating in commencement will be required to wear the new blue regalia. Students may not participate in older attire or regalia that is not aligned with the current regalia colors, branding or styling. This ensures a unified visual representation of our community’s academic excellence and shared Spartan spirit. Academic regalia is available to purchase in-person at the Spartan Bookstore or online, from Herff Jones.

Credential Academic Regalia
Credential candidates shall request academic regalia related to their highest-achieved degree level. If you have not obtained a master's degree you should request undergraduate academic regalia. If you have obtained a master's degree, you should request master's academic regalia.
If you have a Master's degree you should request Master's academic regalia.
Master's Academic Regalia
- SJSU Royal Blue graduation gown, which has different sleeves from a bachelor's gown
- SJSU Royal Blue graduation cap (mortarboard)
- Black tassel, for all graduate candidates, regardless of college
- Academic hood, color-specific to degree type
At Commencement, graduate students will be hooded on stage.
Doctoral Academic Regalia
Doctoral regalia must be ordered online through Herff Jones. Arrange a measuring session early and place orders as soon as possible. Doctoral academic regalia is specific to their doctorate degree, not to the university's design standards for other degree types or colleges.
A less-expensive, non-custom doctoral regalia option is available on Herff Jones website by choosing "Cap and Gown". This option is regalia that is similar in quality to the bachelor and master's academic regalia.
At Commencement, doctoral graduates will be hooded before crossing the stage.
Regalia purchasing options
Academic regalia may be ordered online any time through Herff Jones.
Online options
- September 19: Place an order by this date pick-up at Grad Fest.
- November 20: deadline to order online for home shipping, to arrive before Commencement, without expedited shipping costs.
- December 1: deadline to order online with expedited shipping.
Shipment costs range between $14.90 (standard) to $32 (international).
In-person options
- October 20 through December 17: in-person purchasing at the Spartan Bookstore, from the start of Grad Fest through to Commencement, including the day of the ceremonies.
In-person purchasing is highly-recommended for all undergraduate, master's and credential graduates as it is the fastest and least expensive method to secure academic regalia after the online pre-order window has closed.
