Change Major or Acquire a Minor in the Lurie College of Education

Note: Students cannot submit a change of major request during their first semester at SJSU. 

Change of Major into Child and Adolescent Development

Admission to the ChAD major requires completion of the following four courses with a 2.0 or higher across all four prerequisite courses (D's and F's are not accepted).

  • ChAD 60
  • PSYC 1
  • ChAD 70
  • CHAD 80 (preferred) or STAT 95

For students with fewer than 90 units

Submit the online Change of Major form. Once the form is submitted, please follow up with the ChAD department.

Anticipate an email confirmation within 2-5 business days regarding the status of the request.

For students with more than 90 units

Schedule an appointment via Spartan Connect to meet with one of the ChAD Program Coordinators, Terry O’Donnell-Johnson or Laura Pirazzi. They will review the request, plan a curricular roadmap, and provide instructions for submitting a Change of Major request. 

Declare Minor for Child and Adolescent Development

For students with fewer than 90 units:

Please submit this online Change of Minor form. Once the  form is submitted, please follow up with the ChAD department.

For students with more than 90 units:

Minor in Special Education

Steps to earn a minor in Special Education (Inclusive or Early Childhood), or Deaf Education, you must apply to declare the minor:

  1. Review the information in the Special Education website and in the catalog to ensure you are eligible for one of the minors offered through the Department of Special Education.
  2. Complete the Minor Application Form
    • Minor Application due dates:
      • Fall Semester: October 1
      • Spring Semester: March 1
    • Minor applications will be accepted from the beginning of the semester until the due date.

Minor applications will be processed 4-6 weeks after submission. You will be notified when your minor application is complete.

No applications will be processed during the summer.

Change of Major into Communicative Disorders & Sciences

Changes of major are processed 2x per year (December and May).

Students must have at least one semester of SJSU coursework completed and graded with a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

Three of the five courses below must be completed before a change of major will be processed, including a minimum of one of the sciences courses below

  • BIOL 21, BIOL 30, BIOL 65, BIOL 66 (GE 5B+5C)
  • CHAD 70, PH 15 (GE Area 4)
  • PHYS 1, PHYS 2A/2B, CHEM 1A or CHEM 30A (GE 5A+5C)
  • PSYC 1 (GE Area D) or PSYC 30 
  • STAT 95 (or CHAD 80, PH 67, or SOCI 15) (GE Area 2)

Schedule an appointment with an advisor in the LCOE SSC after all of the required courses are completed.
